The Cameo Theater, 225 Hay Street, in downtown Fayetteville, teams up with the Rooster's Wife to bring master Irish guitarist John Doyle , Thursday Dec. 3 at 8 pm. Friday December 4 will find Doyle in the listening room of the Poplar Knight Spot, in downtown Aberdeen T 6:46. From a musical family in Dublin, John’s influences include well known English folk singers Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson, and The Watersons; Scottish singers Dick Gaughan and John Martin; and fellow Irishmen Paul Brady and Al O’Donnell as well as his father, Sean Doyle , the biggest influence of all. John went on the road as a pro at 16 with the group Chanting House which he formed with Susan McKeown and which eventually included such great players as Seamus Egan, Eileen Ivers, & Donogh Hennessy. John went on to form the highly acclaimed super group, Solas, with Seamus Egan, John Williams, Karan Casey and Winifred Horan which took the folk and Celtic music worlds by storm, in no small part due to John’s powerhouse rhythmic guitar style and innovative arrangements. As a member of Solas, John performed to sold out audiences nationally and internationally as well as appearing on many national TV and radio programs: NBC’s The Today Show, various programs for National Public Radio and Public Radio International, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, E-Town and World Cafe. As part of that critically acclaimed group, he also received three National Association of Independent Record Distributors awards and a Grammy nomination for the band’s self-titled first recording. After leaving Solas, John has gone on to perform and tour with other greats in the Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass worlds , Eileen Ivers, Tim O’Brien, including Tim’s 2006 Grammy-award winning CD, Fiddler’s Green, Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Cathie Ryan, Cherish the Ladies, among others. John is a featured regular for many years in the hugely popular BBC Scotland "Transatlantic Sessions" regularly broadcast in Ireland and at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow . There are few artists more respected in the genre or more in demand in the studio. The final two Sunday shows for this year feature celebrated songwriter Jonathan Byrd, December 6 and IBMA emerging artists nominees Barefoot Movement December 13. Byrd grew up singing in the Southern Baptist church, where his father preached and his mother played piano. After four years in the Navy, he returned to home to play in rock bands. It was at an old-time fiddle festival in the mountains of southwest Virginia where his writing began to change. Assimilating the sounds of southern traditional music, Byrd wrote new songs in an ancient style. After 10 years as a full-time touring songwriter and 7 acclaimed albums, he has firmly established himself as one of the premier singer songwriters performing today. His narrative songs are stunning in their imagery . If that were not enough, Mr Byrd is a heck of finger picker too. Corin Raymond will appear with Jonathan Byrd and his band the Pick Up Cowboys, Sunday Dec. 6 at 6:46 A new tradition begins December 10 at 6:46 at the Given Outpost, 95 Cherokee Road when the Given Memorial Library joins forces with the Rooster's Wife for holiday mayhem from the Joes. Joe Craven, a seventeen year veteran of the David Grisman Quintet, brings his unique flavor for rhythm and style . He combines with Joe Walsh, mandolin player extraordinaire of Mr Sun and the Gibson Brothers fame, and North Carolina's own Joe Newberry, Prairie Home Companion regular, song writer superior, and soon to be guest on the famed TransAtlantic Sessions for the BBC, Scotland. The Joes will be joined by singer songwriter Milly McGinn for this evening of yule inspired improvisation. Expect jazz, bluegrass, stories and songs to bring the twinkle to your Holiday. The program benefits both cultural agencies, the Rooster's Wife, and the Given Library. Tickets: theroosterswife.org or 910.585.1614
