“KENTUCKY NATURAL HISTORY”
by Joe Hedges
Founded in 1996 in Cincinnati, ArtWorks is an award-winning non-profit specializing in working with local youth and using art to impact the local community through a number of strategic initiatives. The largest visual arts employer in the area ArtWorks has hired more than 3,000 youth and 2,000 local artists to date, and shows no sign of slowing down. ArtWorks says “Kentucky is known for its natural beauty and natural treasures” so as its programming has expanded across the river into Covington, Kentucky, they arranged for Joe Hedges to work with Jasmine Akers and several Youth Apprentices to created this 2013 celebration of Kentucky Natural History at Scott and 5th St. On the panels wrapped around two sides of the Kerry Collision Center are a a brachiopod fossil, a Kentucky tulip poplar blossom, a male cardinal, goldenrod blossoms with a honeybee, a spotted bass, a viceroy butterfly and a mastodon skeleton. @artworkscincy
