Author and illustrator Joel Christian Gill is back with a second installment in his graphic history collection: “Strange Fruit Vol 2: More Uncelebrated Narratives in Black History. Continuing with the premise of early African American voices and stories, Gill tells the story of Stagecoach Mary Fields, a 6 ft 200lb tough ass who loved baseball and never backed down from a fight (when the Postal Service needed a stagecoach driver for a dangerous route, Mary literally fought to get the job. Other stories include the tale of the piano virtuoso Blind Tom Wiggins, and singing conjoined twins Millie and Christine McCoy. All short, sweetly illustrated tales to inform and diversify our understanding of the Black experience in the United States. Today’s entry of #sjcomix365 is “Strange Fruit: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History” by @JoelChristianGill (released by Fulcrum Publishing, 2014). This volume is a collection of stories from early African American history that represent the oddity of success in the face of great adversity. Each of the nine illustrated chapters chronicles an uncelebrated African American hero or event. From the adventures of lawman Bass Reeves, to Henry "Box" Brown's daring escape from slavery. The book has received some critical feedback about only showcasing Black men and not any Black women, which Gill makes up for with later graphic bio’s. Alexander Crummell Episcopal Minister, Abolitionist, Civil Rights Pioneer and Educator was educated at the first intergrated school in the US. The Noyes Academy in Canaan NH was briefly established in 1835 until a group of men from Canaan and the surrounding village literally pulled the school off its' foundations and out of town. Yep, another Strange Fruit Story.
