Here's the thing
Yes, Joel is a bit of an asshole
But through out his character development he's become more and more supportive of Midge, and it's obvious how sorry he is for screwing up.
The dude was the most depressed person during Catskills. Not only that but he literally threatened and beat up anyone who messed with Midge in season 2. Remember at the end of season 1 when he broke a guy's nose after he insulted Midge's comedy? Or when he threatened Susie that if she let anything happen to Midge he'd kill her? Or when he punched a guy when he wouldn't pay Midge? Yes. I do too.
I'm not saying I want them back together, but I am saying that we gotta give him a break. He still cares very much for her and we gotta remember that.
