READ AND UNDERSTAND!!! #Repost @island360 ・・・ Stick fighting (Calinda, Kalinda, Kalenda) is a West African tradition that was brought to Trindad by slaves. Africans danced Kalinda before emancipation while the French had their masquerade balls. It is a form of martial arts that is still practiced today, especially during Carnival celebrations. During stick fights, a lead vocalist or #chantuelle would sing call and response chants called #lavways to cheer on stick fighters. This music artform would eventually transform to #Calypso. What is also significant about Kalinda is that when the British, led by Captain Baker, tried to stop #Carnival in Trinidad, revellers, led by #JoeTalmana and his stick fighters, fought back using their sticks during the #CanboulayRiots. The British also tried to ban percussion instruments because of Kalinda, this gave birth to rhythms with iron, bottle and spoon, and the popularity of steel pan music.
