Joey Watson’s practice investigates ceremonial paraphernalia and the spaces that these implements exist in. He is interested in the supernatural forces that objects like these encapsulate and the ways that it’s harnessed. Through invented rituals he establishes a context and significance to the things he makes. They are utilitarian but only within the specificities of that designated space- here they have the opportunity to function as vehicles for transformation, to carry out a kind of transcendent utility.
