John 12:24. “Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (NIV)

John 12:23‭-‬26. “Jesus replied, “Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into his glory. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me, because my servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me.” (NLT)

“There were two kernels of wheat lying on the floor of a cozy barn. One day the farmer came in and told them, “I want to take you out of the barn and plant you in the earth. I’m going to put you in the ground and cover you with soil. It’ll be dark, and you’ll die. But I promise that you will multiply and become fruitful.”

The first kernel of wheat said, “No way! Count me out. I like my comfort, and I don’t want to die.” But the second one, after careful consideration, decided the promise of a future harvest was worth the sacrifice. So the farmer took him outside and planted him but left the first kernel of wheat in the barn.

A few days later, a small green sprout appeared where the seed had been planted. It grew and became a stalk of wheat that produced a hundred more kernels. For the next 40 years, the farmer planted all the seeds that had originated from that first one, and year after year the harvest multiplied. However, the kernel that stayed in the barn remained there by itself, never multiplying.

Which kernel of wheat are you? Are you playing it safe, or have you let Christ plant you in the world? The best way to influence God’s kingdom is to let go of your own desires, get out of your comfort zone, and serve the Lord by serving others.”

The Service of Passionate Devotion

"…do you love Me?…Tend My sheep." - John 21:16

Jesus did not say to make converts to your way of thinking, but He said to look after His sheep, to see that they get nourished in the knowledge of Him. We consider what we do in the way of Christian work as service, yet Jesus Christ calls service to be what we are to Him, not what we do for Him. Discipleship is based solely on devotion to Jesus Christ, not on following after a particular belief or doctrine. “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate…, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). In this verse, there is no argument and no pressure from Jesus to follow Him; He is simply saying, in effect, “If you want to be My disciple, you must be devoted solely to Me.” A person touched by the Spirit of God suddenly says, “Now I see who Jesus is!”— that is the source of devotion.

Today we have substituted doctrinal belief for personal belief, and that is why so many people are devoted to causes and so few are devoted to Jesus Christ. People do not really want to be devoted to Jesus, but only to the cause He started. Jesus Christ is deeply offensive to the educated minds of today, to those who only want Him to be their Friend, and who are unwilling to accept Him in any other way. Our Lord’s primary obedience was to the will of His Father, not to the needs of people— the saving of people was the natural outcome of His obedience to the Father. If I am devoted solely to the cause of humanity, I will soon be exhausted and come to the point where my love will waver and stumble. But if I love Jesus Christ personally and passionately, I can serve humanity, even though people may treat me like a “doormat.” The secret of a disciple’s life is devotion to Jesus Christ, and the characteristic of that life is its seeming insignificance and its meekness. Yet it is like a grain of wheat that “falls into the ground and dies”— it will spring up and change the entire landscape (John 12:24).

SCRIPTURE:

They believed, but they loved human praise more than God’s glory. ~ John 12:43

OBSERVATION:

What about fearing human ridicule more than God's glory?

That, too, makes it all about me first...

...puts me on display...

...and not Jesus...

...not God's glory...

That makes me the "single seed" in verse 24 - not bearing the "much fruit" promised through surrendering - dying - to self and selfishness, and living in and through Him...

...that allows my acts of service to become like Mary's anointing His feet in verse 3 - 

...becoming an "aroma of...perfume" that can fill a room - 

...or a life?

Acts of service for Him... 

APPLICATION:

Love God's glory...

Die to selfishness...

Live as a perfume of service...

PRAYER:

"Father, glorify Your name!" ~ John 12:28

For Him... for you... for yours...
