John Carruthers was a Scottish immigrant who became a prominent member of the Kingston business community. He was a generous supporter of both Queen's University and the Royal Military College, and contributed over half the funds required for the construction of Carruther's Hall at Queen's. He was also instrumental in establishing the precursor to the current Faculty of Engineering and Applied science at the University. The Carruther's monument at Cataraqui Cemetery is set on a Limestone foundation which was restored recently by Edgewater Stonemasons.
