The common areas of the Orient Express were crowded with the guests, mingling together after dinner. You wanted to relax for a while before tucking into your private cabin. You found an available seat after a brief search beside a handsome stranger.

“May I?” You asked, gesturing beside him. 

He looked you over, pondering for a moment before he agreed. He shifted to allow you more room, introducing himself as Edward Ratchett and the man that was splayed with piles of papers and books across from him as Hector MacQueen. You returned the pleasantries, and the two of you settled into some small talk.

He wasn’t particularly chatty, but he was able to hold a conversation. Mr. MacQueen kept to himself while you spoke, busy at work. The bartender brought over a couple of nightcaps. You continued to chat with Edward while you finished your drink. Soon you found your eyes fluttering shut. You tried to remain focused, but once the two of you fell into a companionable silence, you couldn’t stop it. Your head sloped against his shoulder and you were fast asleep.

For his part, Edward was surprised. He didn’t know what to do. He wasn’t in the know of many niceties among society. He looked down at your sleeping form the best he could for a while. Although he was flustered, he let you sleep.
