Have you seen John Cranko (2024)?
Yes
No
I've never heard of this film
While the Mariinsky and Bolshoi were on summer hiatus, I also took a bit of breather from my obsessive ballet blogging. However, I wasn't completely out of pocket. I did get to see Cranko's Onegin at the Houston Ballet. If you have not seen this ballet — GO! I took my very elderly father wtih me and he had no clue what the libretto was about, but he could still follow the story, so that speaks to the ballet's narrative clarity. Connor Walsh and Karina Gonzalez Edwards did not disappoint. I was particuarly struck by Walsh's Onegin, full of arrogance and aloofness. Tatiana's growth from an infatuated girl, to a resolved woman was excellent. The corps showstopper in Act 1 was truly breathtaking. Seeing it live was utterly thrilling. You can see it it around minute 23 here:

There's probably not a better example of a love-hate relationship than me and the ballet Onegin.
Like I love the piece to no end. But I positively HATE so much of what Cranko did with the source material and its characters...
