The Mormon Church (official name: the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) has sued the podcast Mormon Stories, a podcast where people who are or have been Mormons explain their lives and their experiences in relation to the Church.
This podcast has been going on for 20 years, and it's been one of the few public places where ex-Mormons and Mormons who have been hurt by the Church could speak freely and without judgement, and share their story with everyone who is willing to listen. They've shared the experiences of gay members and ex-members, apostates, women, people who were sexually abused by bishops, and all sorts of experiences, both positive and negative. It has helped thousands of people realize that they're not alone and that the Church's control on its members is damaging.
It has also been very important to many people who have been approached by Mormon missionaries and would've joined the religion without real informed consent, because missionaries only explain a small part of what you'll be asked to do once you've joined the religion (which btw includes paying 10% of your gross income to the richest church in the world for the rest of your life).
Of course, the Church is now suing the podcast. After demonizing its founder John Dehlin for years, the Church now seems to be trying to force the podcast to close making them bankrupt.
The podcast's founder has already been very brave all these years sharing these experiences when he's from Utah and most of their neighbours and family are members. He's been excommunicated, insulted and villainized, and has risked a lot. And now there's the expensive trial costs.
