I love Escape From the Bloodkeep so much because it has three of the best story element developments in all of Dimension 20:

Maggie and Leiland going from a place of pettiness and I love Zaul'Nazh more than you to besties who recognise both deserved better than Zaul'Nazh and also I named my baby after you.

John Feathers going from a random eagle acting as transport for NPCs in a battle to an eagle wearing a spider silk suit who is genuinely one of the best NPCs in all of D20.

A party of murder hobos who go from pretty much just some coworkers (who were originally meant to fight each other in the final battle) to maybe the most tight-knit, supportive party ever after the Bad Kids.

And I cannot decide which one is my favourite except I can and it's John Feathers, MVP.

Maggie telling John feathers “be my doula” while they’re both dying and she’s giving birth is so funny and emotional, easily one of my favorite scene in d20 history

Honestly obsessed with the party in “Escape From the Bloodkeep” simply treating creatures with respect and immediately getting them on their side, such a beautiful move

Escape From The Bloodkeep is not my favorite Dimension 20 series (not a jab whatsoever—the fact that a campaign this good falls low on the list is a testament to how amazing Dimension 20 is), but it is the most interesting to me, which is why I always go back to it.

Looking past the stunning comedy for that season, what’s amazing is their portrayal of “evil.” Evilness is not just suffering or malice for the sake of hurting others. It’s not stripping others of their rights or humanity (“but we understand consent!”) It’s not even being mean. The most sadistic character of all was shut down just for being an annoying little dude. The side of evil had nearly identical goals to that of the “Forces of Light”, it’s just that their goals and ideals have a veneer that is associated with darkness. Anything they wanted that was in direct conflict with what the Forces of Light wanted was typecasted as “bad.”

Thus, evil became simply the opposition to perceived “good”, or the normal and the status quo of the bureaucratic ruling class. The sub-meta commentary on how many of the goals or decisions of the “good side” are actually harmful, but are merely portrayed as justice because people like them are treated as an enemy, was amazing all throughout. Leiland was right. “Everyone has a line”, and the cast drawing that line through group improvisation was amazing because you could clearly see halfway through the episodes what the values of the forces of evil actually were.
