John Geddert (21 December 1957 – 25 February 2021) was the head coach of the 2012 US women’s gymnastic team and was suspended in 2018 after being implicated in the sex abuse scandal.

On 25 February 2021, Geddert was charged with 24 felony crimes: 14 counts of human trafficking-forced labor resulting in injury, six counts of human trafficking of a minor for forced labor, and one count each of continuing criminal enterprise, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, second-degree criminal sexual conduct, and lying to a peace officer during a violent crime investigation. Hours after being charged with these crimes, Geddert shot himself.

His long-time friend and team doctor, Larry Nassar, was accused of sexually assaulting “at least 265 young women and girls” and was convicted to serve nearly 100 years in prison (the earliest he could be released is 2108, when Nassar would be 144 years old).

"When I was 11 or 12, I threw up at practice out of fear, something that was common for me and my teammates to do. Geddert examined my vomit to see what I'd eaten on the way to practice. My mom was in a hurry that day so had picked up fast food. Because french fries were not on Geddert's strict nutritional guidelines, he made me get on my hands and knees so he could push my face into my vomit. He then called the rest of the girls over to stand around me and watch me clean it up with vomit dripping from my face and hair."

Police were at former U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics coach John Geddert's house for an investigation Tuesday morning, two agencies confirmed.

A State Journal reporter and photographer witnessed police carry at least one box out of Geddert's home. The same photographer confirmed there was at least one Michigan State Police vehicle outside Twistars in Dimondale. About four boxes were taken out of the gym. Police were still on the scene at noon.

He changed his method and Shannon got her vault. I always wonder about when John Geddert stopped trying to help Jordyn Wieber get a second vault. He said it was because 'she had trouble flipping forward.' Maybe the real trouble was his coaching combined with his ego refusing to let him switch things up.”
