John Hope, Earl of Hopetoun, later Marquess of Linlight (1860-1908)

On This Day in History February 20, 1936: African-American educator and civil rights advocate John Hope (August 2, 1868 - February 20, 1936) passed away at the age of 67. Born to a Scottish father and a black mother in Atlanta, Hope would devote his life in the advancement of education in the form of higher learning for African Americans. This would put him in direct opposition to Booker T. Washington who believed the way for advancement of African Americans lay in technical and vocational training. 

After graduating from Worchester Academy in Massachusetts in 1890, Hope would attend Brown University, graduating in 1894 and devoted four years teaching in the field of science at Nashville’s Roger Williams University. Hope would then accept a teaching position at Atlanta Baptist College which would later famously be known as Morehouse University. 

In 1906, Hope became the first African-American President of Morehouse University. Morehouse and graduate school Atlanta University would merge in 1929, making Hope the first African-American President of Atlanta University. 

Hope also participated in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Niagara Movement which was a predecessor to the NAACP.

On page 8 of Tell My Horse Zora Neale Hurston relays a story of John Hope and uses this story to describe some of the differences in how access to whiteness functions in Jamaica versus the United States. I wanted to do a bit more research on John Hope and his work as an educator in the United States.

Tell My Horse

 John Hope, the late president of Atlanta University, who was described as being “whiter than any of the Mulattoes who had had themselves ruled White” refers to himself as being a part of the Black community with the words “We Negroes--” as a part of a toast at a banquet.  (8)

I could not help but draw connections to Herkskovits and his identification with the Black community. I am curious about whether other people saw similarities between Hope and Herskovits, specifically with their relationship to Black culture.
