By the mid 80s, HK Music Scene is predominantly CantoPop, people compose and sing songs in Cantonese.
However, there are some exceptional cases where Hong Kong composers write and produce music that is sung in different language and gained popularity.
John Laudon is a musician from Canada where he have made a prosperous music career in Hong Kong, writing and arrange songs for Hong Kong artists. Given his popularity he was granted an opportunity to form a band, City Beat, with his fellow friends from aboard.
This album featured 2 sets of songs. One set was his composition in English and performed by the band, the other set is the same set of songs “transwriting” to Cantonese, and performed by the band as well.
There is a special credit to a Hong Kong music, where he teach the English speaking band on the Cantonse pronunciation to the songs and sang through the demo for them. An interesting mention tho
