Former Moody Blues Singer and Bassist John Lodge Dies at 82
John Lodge, the longtime singer, songwriter and bassist for the Moody Blues, died “suddenly and unexpectedly” his family said.
Lodge was 82.
“John peacefully slipped away surrounded by his loved ones and the sounds of the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly,” his family said in an Oct. 10 statement. “We will forever miss his love, smile, kindness and his absolute and never-ending support.”
Lodge joined the Moody Blues in 1966 and remained with the band until its 2018 breakup. He played on every one of the group’s albums, save for ’65’s the Magnificent Moodies and counted “Ride My See-Saw,” “Isn’t Life Strange,” “I’m Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band),” “Talking out of Turn” and many other tracks among his contributions to the Moody Blues’ songbook.
“I’m very sad and shocked to hear of John’s passing,” Lodge’s longtime bandmate Justin Hayward said in a statement. “I have such happy memories of making music together. My sincere condolences to his dear wife and family.”
Producer Tony Visconti recalled how Hayward and Lodge ”harmonized perfectly” and eulogized the latter as a “gregarious and generous man,” in a post on social media.
“We will miss him,” Visconti said. “He was a great man.”
Kenney Jones, former drummer of Small Faces, Faces and the Who, lamented the loss of his “dear friend” Lodge on social media.
“I’m really going to miss him,” Jones said.
After the Moodies’ demise, Lodge kept busy as a solo artist, starting with 2019’s Royal Affair tour with Asia and Yes, whose singer, Jon Davison, is Lodge’s son-in-law. Both bands mourned his passing on social media with Asia calling Lodge “a good friend” of the band and Yes noting the family connection.
Lodge released an EP, Love Conquers All, in February and was to embark on a short tour in December.
“May John Lodge rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
