Good day all and welcome to another edition of Bluefanguy’s Book Thoughts! Today’s books is The Witches of Ruidoso by John Sandoval.

In nineteeth century New Mexico, Elijah meets Beth Delilah Jameson and her father when they arrive in town. The two become fast friends. Around this time, a woman known as Senora Roja starts paying special attention to Elijah, attention that soon becomes uncomfortable to Elijah yet he cannot ignore her manner or actions. There are already rumours that Senora Roja may be a witch and the observations of Elijah and Beth Delilah only support that belief. As the two go about their day to day lives and interact with the interesting characters in town, the evil that lingers near becomes more apparent and the two youths’ friendship may be their only defense.

The first thing I noticed about this book upon receiving it from the library was that it’s pretty short. Even so, the story draws you in not only with Elijah’s observations of the town, including the meeting between him and Beth Delilah. It isn’t long before Senora Roja’s presence makes itself known, filling Elijah’s dreams with disturbing desires that Elijah is practically defenseless against. Even though it’s pretty short, there are scenes that just keep you hooked such as the friends following Senora Roja to eventually breaking into her home to learn the fate of a local girl. There are also scenes where the two spend time with their Native American friend and learn how nature around them is aware of the various presences in and near the town.

If you love stories about about friendship, evil that tempts, and the willingness to face it, then you just may love this book!
