Jane Fonda has spoken about her mother struggling with depression with Henry Fonda gone for long periods (film shooting and WWII) and generally being emotionally distant; with the above 1936 gossip item, perhaps she was used to and liked being with a group of his friends a lot of the time before they were married, which made things more lively when Henry was distant. Just a thought
