My own copies of "Mary Barton" and "North and South" novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell in brown Penguin Popular Classics edition. Both of them had the same price and rare to find. These novels seemed like a companion at each other as both of them have themes about poverty and the situation of the people during Industrial Revolution. These books seemed quite fragile but I like their sweet, fragrant smell.

In his letters to John S. Thornton of whom was a captain in the 3rd Virginia alongside Monroe and joined the same month (February, 1776), James Monroe is very frank to the older man--meaning he does not hide anything. I sense another father figure in Monroe’s life previously undiscussed. They were fifteen years apart and in his letters Monroe is very open about his failures and his life. One of the best, and most telling, excerpts from one of their letters, I believe is when Monroe states that he is “disgusted” by officers who “place self-interest” ahead of “patriotism”
