Shooters 9-ball Summer Tour Finale

After a very long day and night of fierce battles! Shooters “9 & Under” 9-ball Summer Tour Finale has finally come to end as Waleed Hashem was undefeated throughout the tournament and captured the Championship Title! Ronald Giron played well all day finished 2nd. Brittany Bryant came third and John Timmersons placed fourth. Michael Victoria, Jehlar Fernandez, Chao Z and Jeffrey Campilla stood 5th-8th respectively.

Shoutout goes to the winners of today’s event for playing exceptionally well and attaining their respective wins. Shooters Snooker Club would like to take this time to congratulate all the winners of today’s event and also sincere thank to everyone that came out today to support and play our Summer events and check out the extremely exciting action! JJ takes down his first tournament!

Once again we have a first time winner at Shooters this past weekend. It seems like every month we are getting a new winner! Capped at 32 to make the tournament a 1 day event there were plenty of strong shooters out of the field. With previous winners showing up in the likes of John Timmermans, Ryann Malinao, and Mario Morra. There were no major upsets throughout the tournaments as the players that you would expect to win, won, except one!

The last 8 included, on the A side, Mario Morra versus Ryann Malinao and Jody Johnson versus Art Bertoni. On the B side there was Tom Fraser versus Davis Menor and John Timmermans versus Tony Hong. Who would you bet to win? Both A side matches were fairly evenly matched with an 8+ playing an 11 and a 5+ playing a 5. Both sets came down to only two games between them. Ryann Malinao became the beneficiary of his match winning 8-9 and Jody Johnson of his winning 6-3. This sends Mario and Art to the B side to try and come back and get their revenge.

The first B side match wasn’t even close, other than Davis’ loss to the B side, he had been playing strong all day and managed to smoke Tom Fraser 5-1. Davis now has a mountain to climb in the likes of Mario Morra. With Mario grinding as always he manages to win with a cushion of 11 games to 3. With John Timmermans being a very strong 9 you would have to guess that he would beat Tony Hong…and you would be right, John advances beating Tony 9 games to 4. This must have fueled John even further as he takes out Art with a doughnut. This leaves the two titans Mario and John to play against each other. Both players go shot for shot, rack for rack with each other. Unfortunately though, this is unfavourable for Mario as the match eventually gets to 9-9 meaning John takes home the W.

Back on the A side with Ryann Malino shooting as well as he has this tournament it would be a tall order to beat him. Jody was up to the task! The match started out tentative for both players but Ryann’s lack of safety play couldn’t keep Jody out and Jody eventually takes the match 5-6 and now guarantees him first or second place in this week’s tournament. It is now between John and Ryann to play out for third place. The A side defeat seemed to affect Ryann as his form did not continue against John losing 9 games to 5. John now has a shot to win yet another tournament. Can he overcome the rock that is Jody Johnson?

While it was an exhilarating match to watch Jody became the eventual and seemed to be inevitable victor winning his first ever Shooters tournament! Congratulations to Jody for his big first ever win at Shooters. Additionally, Shooters would like to congratulate John and Ryann for their deep runs in the tournament. Thank you to all the players for coming out to continually support Shooters’ events. See you all at the next tournaments scheduled below.

10 Ball Silver Jubilee

You were all asking for an even up tournament. It came and went this past weekend with an amazing turnout. There were 70 registered players, but Shooters Snookerclub capped it at 64 due to time constraints. That is a great turnout for an even up tournament and might give incentives for more of them. People from all handicaps came out to this event, however, naturally in an even up event you have to favour the 9s as the potential winners. However, in light of this, Shooters Snookerclub sponsored two individuals from this event to play in the finale, one person from the 2-5 SL handicap and another from the 6-7 SL handicap. So there was everything to play for.

With such a good turnout we saw the likes of Adam Monture, Marc Dumoulin, Rob Hall, John Timmermans, Ryann Malinao, and many more. Coming down to the top 8. On the A side there was John Timmerman versus Marc Dumoulin and Gene Chipongian versus Adam Monture. On the B side you had Waleed against Stefane and Ryann Malinao versus Rob Hall. Prior to these matches Kyle Godin was the 5 to benefit from the free entry spot. There was still Waleed, Stefane, and Gene who could win the 6-7 spot. John had a strong showing on Saturday and continued his form on Sunday to send Marc to the B side with an 8-4 win. Gene and Adam had a much more exciting match. Adam was playing strong, but Gene was grinding the match out and was making a comeback. It went to hill-hill and the 10 and 2 were very close together and Adam tried to make a carom but undercut it and missed leaving Gene back to the table. Adam gets another try at the 2 10 combo after a miss from Gene, as the rack continues Gene gets back to the table and manages to run it out with everyone from the stands hitting the tables in congratulations. This was the hugest upset of the tournament.

On the B side, Stefane hit another gear against Waleed and sent Waleed out of the tournament winning 7-2. Ryann was on the receiving end of an on form Rob Hall who also won by the 7-2 margin. This now leaves Stefane to play Marc and Rob to play Adam. Marc seemed to have run out of steam and after a few unforced errors, Stefane beat Marc 7-4. Adam and Rob was a match of the titans! Both seemed pretty even with each other but an on form Rob is hard to beat and Adam lost 5 racks to 7. Rob’s good form continued against Stefane as he lost 7-3.

Back to the A side, this left the very happy but relieved Gene to face another titan in the form of John Timmermans. John showed no remorse playing Gene super tight all match allowed him to show his dominance as he walked away with the win beating Gene 7 games to 1. This sent Gene to the B side to face Rob Hall in the B side finals. While Gene did not get smoked like he did previously he, unfortunately, was beaten as the underdog story comes to an end losing 7-5. This put Rob in the finals against John having to beat John twice. John has been stroking the ball amazingly all weekend and it would certainly be a tall order for Rob to win this tournament. While last week’s tournament went to the last set, this was ended early with John walking away with a big lead and keeping that lead until the very end winning 9-4 and becoming this week’s 10 Ball Silver Jubilee champion!

Congratulations to John who played strong both days straight to deservingly win this tournament. Additionally, congratulations to Rob Hall and Gene for their stellar performances, Rob has been very consistent this season in his playing and placements. Gene, on the other hand, surprised us all with his very tight game coming ahead of all the other lower handicaps to win the 6-7 free entry into the finale! Strong start for Mr. Sanderson at Amateur Tour Stop #1

A fitting start for the new season. With many high handicapped players coming out to the Amateur’s first event of the new season there was bound to be some good matches. On the A side there was John Timmerman versus a very good showing from Art Bertoni and Carlin Sanderson versus Ronald Giron. On the B side there was Waleed Hashem versus Shane Van Gummerson, Terry Demeo versus Aqeel Mohammad, Rocky Mansera versus Richard Murray, and Rob Hall versus Darwin Madriaja.

John has been playing strong all tournament not letting any of his matches go to hill-hill and it was the same against Art. Winning 9-2, John now advances to the A side final. Arguably one of the most interesting matches of the night Ronald and Carlin have a very tense back and forth battle, but the recent strong form of the Filipino was too much for Carlin as he loses 4-7 and gets sent to the B side. Ronald now faces John in the A side finals. The B-side was dramatic as well with Aqeel making a rare showing deep into the tournament beating Terry 4-3 and Waleed, who previously beat Shane. Aqeel then goes on to face Art and edges out a victory in a very close hill-hill match to sit in the B side semifinals. Rob Hall who consistently makes it far in the Shooters tournaments once again comes out ahead of Darwin and Rocky to face Carlin. Unfortunately, Rob lost hill-hill to Carlin as their slight handicap disparity makes the difference. Carlin has no problem dispensing of Aqeel and runs over him winning 9-1. Timmerman’s strong display continued as he beat Ronald 9-3 which now puts John in the Finals and guarantees himself first or second place. This allows Carlin to enact his revenge against Ronald in another hill-hill match winning 9-6. Carlin who is no stranger to coming back from the B-side now faces John in the final only having to beat him once as this is not a special event. These two players are no strangers to the spotlight or finals, having both previous won many tournaments at Shooters. John is the epitome of consistency and Carlin is the B side comeback king. Carlin who was determined to start the season strong beat John 8-7 is a tightly contested match. This makes Carlin the first Amateur Champion of the 2016-17 season!

Adam Monture Claims Shooters’ Amateur Event #6 in Style!

On January 30/31, 2016, Shooters Snooker Club in Toronto held its 6th Amateur 9-ball event. With the final Amateur event just over two months away, the anticipation for this event for players SL4 to SL9 had been building. With 49 players competing for a prize pool of $2,000 and a Calcutta of $1,440, the tournament was expected to be an unpredictable 2-day grind.

After a long day 1 filled with great matches and some tournament favourites being eliminated, the field was shaved down to four undefeated players on the A-Side and four players on the B-Side with one loss thus far. There was a representative for each skill level from 5-9 going into day 2.

A-Side: Rob Johnson vs Adam Monture Jehlar Fernandez vs John Timmermans B-Side: Naomi Williams vs Ryan Murray Marius Nakas vs Karl Kasprzak

The first matches of Day 2 began at 1:00 pm and Adam M and John T sent Rob J and Jehlar F to the B-Side by winning their matches 9-4. Jehlar and Rob would then face off against Naomi W and Marius N respectively. Jehlar did not let the B-Side slow him down as he defeated Marius, while Naomi continued to succeed on the B-Side. Naomi shot very well, defeating Jehlar 7-1 and she would await the loser of the hot-seat match.

Meanwhile on the A-Side, the two SL 9’s would face off against each other. Adam M’s shooting was spectacular, earning him the 9-3 victory over John T for the hot seat. Naomi and John then faced off in an even battle that saw Naomi earn her spot back at the A-Side to face Adam for the Amateur title.

After Naomi W lost her second match of the tournament, she went on to win 9 straight matches to earn a second chance to win the tournament against Adam M. Adam would eventually spoil the party for Naomi and claim the Amateur 9-Ball event #6 title in style, going undefeated in his 6 matches throughout the weekend.

Ada attains Revenge

The 7th tournament of the 2014/15 Shooters Amateur Event took place on the weekend of March 14 & 15th at the Shooters Snooker and Sports Club in North York. High demand was again the norm for this event as the field size was increased to 72 players from the typical 64. This tournament’s popularity continues to demonstrate that pool can thrive in the GTA with the right format and the active recruitment of players.

Despite the very heavy — and often overlapping — pool schedule in Southern Ontario this year, this event continues to attract players from across Southern Ontario. While most players are from the GTA area, the most recent Amateur drew players from London to the west, Kingston to the east, Midland to the north and St. Catherines to the south.

After play concluded on Saturday, John Timmermans, Ben Chang, Romeo Zulueta and Alan Ada were undefeated on the ‘A’ side while the ‘B’ side survivors had Wayne Tate, Kevin Oliveira, Mike Patay, Oscar Zapata, Nito Bucais, Justin Kluznik, Glenn Seeseman and Dave Mills returning for Sunday play. While there were some familiar faces who successfully ‘graduated’ from the first day competition there were also a number of new players, some of whom were playing this event for the first time. Not surprisingly, most of the Sunday matches were very competitive and when the dust settled Alan Ada had sent Ben Chang to the ‘B’ site going undefeated to capture the ‘A’ side title. Chang and Mike Patay were then left to fight for the ‘B’ side bragging rights. The Ada/ Chang match was a reversal of an earlier ‘404’ tournament when Chang knocked Ada to the ‘B’ site title match. Chang prevailed against Patay setting up a rematch against Ada. In the tournament final Alan Ada again emerged victorious gaining some measure of revenge for the December ‘404’ tournament.

Congratulations to Alan Ada on his Amateur Event win. This is the first win of a ‘major’ GTA tournament for the veteran in some time. And Ben Chang refuses to go away! With his continuing strong play Ben has been Mr. Consistency this year in spite of seeing his handicap increase a couple of times to reflect his dominance in the Amateur and ‘404’ tournaments at Shooters.

As always, thanks to those who participated in the ‘404’ at Shooters Snooker and Sports Club. Please remember that players must notify the tournament organizer of cancellations in sufficient time to permit others to participate.

The next Shooters Amateur Event will be held April 25 and 26th, 2015. If you have played in fewer than 3 Amateur Events you will be required to pay a higher entry fee in order to participate in the Amateur final.

Hogan holds on …

Another successful installment of the 2014/15 ‘404’ series took place this past weekend (February 28 & March 1) at the Shooters Snooker and Sports Club. This was the 7th event in this season’s tournaments.

Despite a very busy pool schedule this season with ‘major’ tournaments on every weekend from October to May and at least 2 other ‘major’ tournaments this past weekend, this ‘404’ event drew a strong field of 57 players to Shooters. The weekend field was comprised mainly of GTA players with several out-of-town players also attending although out-of-towners were less represented than usual. As in past ‘404’ and Shooters Amateur events, the field continues to attract players who have never before participated in these events and those making a return to this level of competition.

After play concluded on Saturday, Greg Plester, Naomi Williams, Tom Hogan and Ben Chang were undefeated on the ‘A’ side while the ‘B’ side had John Timmermans, Dave Robins, Stefane Godinho, Joshua Bryan, Carlin Sanderson, Rafiq Kassam, Sumon Sarkar and Shane Gummerson returning for Sunday play. Not surprisingly, most of the Sunday matches were very competitive and when the dust settled Ben Chang had gone undefeated to capture the ‘A’ side title while Tom Hogan and Naomi Williams were left to contest ‘B’ side bragging rights. Hogan prevailed against Williams setting up a rematch against Chang who had sent him to the ‘B’ side. In the tournament final Hogan exacted his revenge by defeating Chang 6-1.

Congratulations to Tom Hogan on his 404 tournament win. Tom played a giant-killer role by defeating Ben who has ruled this pool season as the player to beat despite increasingly challenging handicap changes to reflect his dominance.

As always, thanks to those who participated in the ‘404’ at Shooters Snooker and Sports Club. The Shooter’s tournaments continue, however, to be plagued by no-shows and last minute cancellations. This results in a tournament field that is less than capacity. Players must notify the tournament organizer of cancellations in sufficient time to permit others to participate. This is not only a discourtesy to the tournament organizer and the rest of the players but it causes the tournament to begin unnecessarily late time after time. Steps will be taken to address this issue.

The next Shooters ‘404’ will be held March 28 & 29, 2015.
