POV: you just interrupted the archivist
A few days ago, I decided to listen to the tma s3 finale again for research reasons and this specific part of the absolute chaos The Unkowing was caught my eye:
Now, Nikola's word choice here gets particularly heartwrenching after you take Jon's mental state into consideration.
People, especially in a state of crisis, tend to interpret information that's consistent with their desires as the truth. In this particular moment, the thing Jon was more willing to believe was that he was talking to Tim, his friend. Even if that was a bit far from the factual truth, it's what he wanted to believe and therefore the best way to trick him into trusting The Stranger.
If you don't buy this yet, take a look at this excerpt a bit further on in this conversation:
Even when extremely confused, Jon is trying so hard to rectify even a bit of the strain he put on their relationship during s2, fumbling with promises in an attempt show Tim that he cares, that he didn't mean the things he said before, that he's scared he'll lose him too.
Nikola is using that leverage to coax Jon into letting go of the detonator, clearly starting to get a bit impatient with how long it's taking. Still, every once in a while she says something friendly in Tim's voice as if to encourage Jon to go on. Oh, and he's eager not to dissapoint, because Tim is his friend, he can't fuck this up again.
And at last, the Archivist looks up. At last, he looks into the eye that sees all, and knows all, and clutches at the secret terrors of your heart. The Ceaseless Watcher of all that is, and all that was; the voracious, infinite hunger the tears at his soul, invoking him to discover, to observe, to experience all, and everything, and forever.
