Reports of a recent outburst during a meeting with teacher’s union members, where Fetterman allegedly shouted, slammed his hands on the table, repeated himself, and stormed out, are only the latest red flags. Former staffers have described a pattern of erratic behavior, including a refusal to follow medical advice, not taking his medication and signs of paranoia. He is being an angry boss, and angry bosses are bad bosses. An unstable work environment with high turnover is especially bad if the office is that of a U.S. Senator.

On the merits, Fetterman is far better prepared for the job than Oz, a celebrity doctor with no political experience. Fetterman was the mayor of Braddock, an ailing town outside of Pittsburgh, and he has spent years aiding and organizing disaffected working-class voters who have been fast leaving the Democratic party. His victory in the primary was commanding – he crushed a celebrated centrist congressman, Conor Lamb, winning all across the state – and demonstrated he was a candidate who could appeal to progressives and moderates alike, exciting both the activist grassroots and regular Democrats. Fetterman became the answer to the old Bernie v Hillary civil war – why not a candidate who can be both?

Young idealists thought Fetterman might actually be different before he turned out to be more of the same, just with funnier tweets. Young people disapprove of Biden’s pro-Israel tilt in the war (nearly 70%), want to prioritize climate over the economy (nearly 60%), and don’t support curbing legal immigration (just 27%) — yet struggle to find candidates who’ll stand up for them.
