As the Gelgoog's testing faces delays, Zeonic revives their R-type Zaku project, producing the MS-06R-2 Zaku 2 R-2 – which they promote as "a Gelgoog wearing a Zaku's skin."

Like the R-1A before it, the R2 is passed over for mass-production – only four are built. The first three are assigned to ace pilots Major Johnny Ridden, Colonel Gabby Hazard, and Colonel Robert Gilliam. Ever hopeful of further developments, Zeonic assign the fourth unit to Elliot Rem for continued experimentation.
