Do excuse me for having missed the video premiere of this track from Satellites, last month. As they say, all good things do come to those who wait although the man behind the project seems intent on keeping on the front foot, with his second album Satellites.02 having arrived just twelve months after his debut set Satellites.01 first hit iTunes back in August 2012.

Vic has a hauntingly low baritone voice at times that is very reminiscent of Matt Berninger of The National. The subject matter through-out the record is heavy on feelings of alienation, depression, death, and darkness, which is not much different than the subject matter of most songs from The National. However, despite the subtle similarities, this is not an attempt in my opinion to re-create the same thing as The National but to expand upon the same feelings in Vic’s own way. In turn we are given a beautiful record that is haunting and beautiful from start to finish.
Through-out the record Vic showcases his abilities as a multi-instrumentalist using a multitude of instruments organic and electronic to get his point across. The music is strong, such as songs like “Railway Line” featuring a beautiful piano riff to open with Vic’s smooth baritone entering as the song transitions into an electronic drum backbeat holding it steady until erupting into the chorus with layered vocals, mallet percussion, strings, and synths. Another key track on .01 is a song called “Best Days Of Our Lives”, also holding strong with the same aesthetic that the bulk of the record follows with piano, strong vocals, great harmonies, and various instrumentation to fill out the song in a delightfully depressing way.
Honestly, this is a record that I had previously before RSD heard only 1 or 2 tracks off of and already knew I needed to track it down, and it was worth the wait and it is worth every second you may spend searching for it. After just 1 listen all the way through I was floored by how good this record is from front to back. It really made me wish I had pursued this record even harder before-hand, but I am glad I was able to get this special release on Record Store Day, it really was the highlight record of my day and maybe even a highlight in my record collection PERIOD.
For Fans of: The National, Coldplay, Elbow
