I’ve talked about this on twitter just today with some other folks actually, hence why I’m reminded of Igadevil.

I planned to do a Kamen Rider related site that could be akin to what Igadevil did with his site but as a collaborative effort, but obv that hasn’t come to fruition yet because time & effort & lack of any website management skill haha

He’ll watch it on his own somehow if I bring it up constantly and talk about how much it sucks.

I doubt he can suggest an anime that’s actually bad enough to make me do that though. I’d even say that it’s impossible.

Consider this ask about Blade of the Immortal shot.

Ok so before I jump into this, I fully admit a lot of this is coming from what I can recall of the series when I first read it in 8th grade and again in High School. I also owned but lost a good chunk of the series. But that’s a completely separate story on it’s own.

So here’s what you should know going into the series:

- Even though by the title, it seems like the series is focused on Manji, the immortal swordsman who seeks to end his immortality. A good chunk of the story focuses on Rin, who hires Manji to be her bodyguard on her quest to kill this highly skilled swordsman who killed her father and her father’s dojo. Knowing fully well that she cannot by all means be capable of doing this herself because the guy in question has been going on an onslaught assimilating and slaughtering other dojos on this maddening quest to be the strongest and pen-ultimate dojo/swordsmen. Manji is only along for the ride because killing this guy and his entire group seems like a factor to breaking his curse… to him at least.

Got all of that? Good. Because then the story gets flipped fucking sideways on it’s head quickly and none of that matters for a ton of volumes.

- There’s an entire group who also wants the same things as Rin. But in an entirely supremely extreme way. I think if I recall correctly, they’re method was “slaughter everyone and leave no survivors.” Manji, who I should note is anything but moral was tempted to join this group because their methods of execution align. 

- Everyone in said group are all criminals who were paid out of their death sentences by the leader said group. One of which was a woman who killed her husband who had plotted to do A LOT of shit to her and bleached her hair as a result. There’s also one dude in their group who was a complete asshole and purposely goes after ONLY HER because and I wish I was making this shit up, he wanted revenge on Manji who cut off his arm and he was jealous of the kind of attention she was giving Manji. (short version: Just fuck everything about Beast.)

- I personally stopped reading up to volume 17 because (outside of Beast) between 12-17 volumes they spent only 1 volume on Rin who just became separated from Manji. And had the misfortune of finding her target who discovered her goal of killing him quickly but saw that as being an attractive trait. So he keeps her around, despite Rin’s almost successful assassination attempt on him.

- Did I mention it’s poor treatment of female characters? Because boy howdy is it chuck full of that garbage. I mean sure we get Rin who despite being separated by her body guard stays strong and a female assassin who legit stabbed and cut off a guy’s thigh in front of them. But overall it just ends up being so messy. 

- I also have no clue how they resolved Rin and Manji being separated or if they ever resolve the entire assassination plot by it’s ending. 

- I guess a good pro is they do mix up A TON of actual weapons into the series. Like an automatic concealed bow that fires poisonous darts. The poison steaming from a specific kind of toad. And there’s always a weapons list compiled and updated on every weapon shown off in the series.

There’s probably more I’m forgetting but those are the things that even years down the line have stuck with me about the series.

Heads up. Volume 13, Beast has VERY heavy details on torture, including heavily implied rape.

Also tons of graphic violence. Including tons of dismemberment. I don’t know if the series ever finished since I paused for months after reading Beast than came back to read up to 17 which I cannot even remember what that volume is called.
