Make Music Every Day, Day 25: Bass Étude in D. I find the bass to be a totally fascinating instrument. I rarely pick it up so I’m not very good at it. There’s two aspects of it that really compel me: One is the physicality of the instrument, the big strings, the long neck, the big stretches and what it feels like to play. Second, of course is the sound that it makes, the range, and it’s rumbling, mumbling timbre. Sounds that occupy a place on aural spectrum that I just process differently, with my hearing and in my body. What I did was to tune the lower three strings to a G chord and the upper three strings to a D chord, first inversion.
