au where jim and leonard know each other from the time they're in kindergarten and stay friends until leonard goes off to medical school and jim inherits his late father's business after a few years and a failed divorce, leonard moves back home and takes a job in the pediatrics department of the city's best hospital. he treats a little boy with straw blond hair and eyes the color of a memory he used to know. when the boy's father steps into the room, it's like leonard never left for school all those years ago. jim stands there a moment with a face of wonder before the little boy squeals a "daddy" and both of their attentions to back to the boy. after they leave, leonard goes to check off the boy's chart and finds a note that says "i missed you, bones" and suddenly he's happy to be home
