Lunch with one-shot: Pale in comparison

Lunch with culture, which today is Pale in comparison by joiedevivre2011. Update: joiedevivre2011 is also here on tumblr of course.

Todays second plate, a breezy 861 words. It starts in the kitchen with Jane and Angela being civil for once, talking about Maura who is post-breakup.

"She's not a mess. I'm not even sure she knows what that word is," Jane joked. Her tone then became serious. "She's just…sad."

The conversation gently moves from Maura and Jack to Jane and Maura, as Jane unexpectedly admits that there is a reason she dislikes every man that Maura takes an interest in. In my opinion it’s wonderful because it’s so free of drama. Angela basically just nods and asks if Jane plans on telling her any time soon.

I have a hard time describing this because it is vanilla. I’m a rocky road person. Strong chocolate, candied nuts, all kinds of junk. In dessert and fiction, usually. But done right, vanilla is really precious. It’s not boring, it’s subtle, and nuanced, and delightful. This story is a brief piece of romance, but it is just that. It’s white sheets, sunlight through open windows and a mild breeze. To me, it is refreshing. The name joiedevivre is fitting. There is joy in this.

And yes, romance has been done a million times but this is still new light through old windows. I love it.
