What if one Kanye lyric captures over 125 years of Black political thought? "Even if you in a Benz, you still a..." is one of the most important statements ever made! For generations, Black Americans have wrestled with the question: Can achievement protect us from racism? Following Reconstruction, many believed that education, institution-building, economic success, and moral uplift would strengthen Black communities and demand recognition of our humanity. Anddddddd, T. Thomas Fortune will forvever be one of the greatest Black advocates of the 19th and 20th centuries. Yet history has shown us something equally important. White supremacy has never depended on what Black people accomplish. It depends on preserving hierarchy. If we earn degrees, the standard changes. If we build wealth, the standard changes. If we gain influence, the standard changes. That's why T. Thomas Fortune advocacy and Kanye's lyric continues to resonate. It isn't glorifying defeat... it's about asking the question why the measuring stick keeps moving.

If you've ever heard "respectability politics" you owe this term to Dr. Evelyn Brooks Higginsbotham. She comes from a family that helped build, preserve, and document Black history for our entire community! Then came Evelyn. In Righteous Discontent (1993), she introduced one of the most influential—and most misunderstood—concepts in Black intellectual history: the politics of respectability. This was never about getting White approval! So what was it about? It was about Blackness determining how we wanted to be treated. But, we all need to make sure as we talk about how we "present" as a community, we know what certain things our ancestors did to protect ourselves and how we've evolved over time.
