It had been a slow day in the European Dead Zone.
Nik’s scavenging had been next to unsuccessful, in terms of finding the parts he needed to complete repairs to the jump-ship he’d been piecing together for the last three years; in fact, he would have called it a complete failure if he hadn’t unearthed that gem of a rifle slung proudly over his back under his cloak.
Nik had never seen anything quite like it- with its beautiful hand-laid wooden stock and single-shot bolt-action, it was certainly a unique relic the Cryptarchs would have lost their damn minds over. It was in rough shape and needed some cleaning before he would have considered it reliable, but the first time he’d pulled the trigger and nailed a Dreg in the eye from half a mile away, Nik was immediately in love. And it wouldn’t have hurt to have another project to keep him occupied.
As he skirted the cliff shelves below the drop-off, his ghost companion materialized behind him with a musical chirp. “I’m picking up a handful of readings just over the ridge- Fallen and-” It paused in confusion, rotated its appendages right, then left again.
But Nik didn’t stop to listen, just kept climbing as he asked, “What is it?” in a passive tone.
“I’m getting a faint light reading as well; could be a new Guardian... we may want to check it out.”
The Hunter launched himself up the side of the cliff in confirmation, popping up in spurts of three in between brief contact with the earth beneath his feet, unslung his hodgepodge of a Trax Onus scout rifle and crept to the edge of the cliff to scope out the scene; immediately he spotted a group of Vandals pursuing a Hunter on foot, and they didn’t look like they were having a very good time.
“You should probably do something.”
“Relax,” he assured with a mischievous grin, “We were all new kids once... this one’s gotta learn to fend for themselves.” He could almost hear the ghost huffing behind him... or maybe it was just his Sabre friend returning from her rounds.
The big cat sauntered over to him and shoved his head into the ground with her own as she nuzzled him rather aggressively before flopping down on the ground next to him. Nik let out a loud groan as he tried to scoot out from under her heavy head, but her nose found his cheek, and before long, her tongue as well, which made him shudder. “Hessa, wait,” he commanded in a firm tone, to which the Sabre immediately rolled off of him and laid down on the ground beside him, alert and awaiting his next request.
When he was finally free, he looked back to see that the scenario had just gotten worse; the Vandals had been joined by a small group of Dregs on Pikes, which had caught up to and encircled the wayward Guardian. Alright, so maybe he did need to do something now.
“Hessa,” he spoke the cat’s name again, her attention piqued in his direction at the sound of it.
“Hunt.”
Swiftly she rose, and tracked her way down the cliff toward the group, as Nik continued to track the Vandals, watching and waiting for the right time to strike.
