Thinking about how in the 90s billie joe armstrong of green day and jon ginoli of pansy division wanted to take photos of themselves doing Gay Shit™ to fuck with the media but ran out of film on the camera so all they got was this shot of them cuddling
A drawing a did of my dear Jon Ginoli MWA MAA I love him sm !!
The Significance of Pansy Division: how America's most well-known queercore band came to be
Pansy Division - "For Those About to Suck Cock" 7" (Lookout Records, 1996).
1 Original Track:
"Headbanger" (featuring a guest guitar solo from a Kirk Hammett of Metallica under an alias)
&
2 Cover Tracks:
"Sweet Pain" (by Kiss) & "Breaking the Law" (by Judas Priest).
"U.S. Government Out of Our Asses!"
“That’s me curled up backstage with Billie Joe. We had discussed doing some fake shots depicting Billie Joe in gay situations, thinking that’d mess with the media. We never got farther than this, in part because it was the last shot on this roll of film.”
- Jon Ginoli, Deflowered: My Life in Pansy Division, 2009
Shitpost art of a band I love, cuz I can. Chris Freeman (left) and Jon Ginoli from Pansy Division (circa the early 90s when it was just Jon, Chris and the drummer of the week) in Pop Team Epic Style because this has been sitting around in my absurdist-humored head for a while now. And I admire these guys a lot.
I'll be honest, a lot of their earlier work can get too lewd for my liking (mind you, an asexual lady like me isn't the target audience). And while those particular songs aren't my cup of tea, I really respect the balls it took for these dudes to be as overtly gay and in your face as they were. They became the change they wanted to see in rock music, and that's really admirable. I'm glad they gave gay dudes rock music they could relate to and all that. And proving that gay men can make kickass rock music!!!! Personally, I prefer a lot of their later work, especially the stuff on their best album Absurd Pop Song Romance; 10/10 an underrated gem. (I plan to review it one day. I highly recommend giving it a listen!!!)
I love and admire this band a lot. And it's a damn shame that they're so criminally underrated they are. If you're a dude who's into dudes and you love rock music, definitely check these dudes out!! Or if you like queercore/LGBT+ friendly music (just be warned, a lot of their songs - especially their early content - can get X-rated, so look up the lyrics at your own risk). Sometimes they're humorously homoerotic, sometimes they're deep and introspective. They rock!!
When I first bought my bass, I DM'd the band's Facebook page for advice, and they actually responded!! It was a total "senpai noticed me" moment. sta.sh/21x761anl6l
I actually got to geek out over Jon Ginoli at the Lookout Zoomout virtual concert that happened back in January. I told him how I admired him, how he influenced me, and how I loved Absurd Pop Song Romance. It was surreal and definitely the highlight of my year so far. I just wish I'd taken a screenshot of the moment. :,)
Maybe someday, whenever this Covid shit dies down, I can see them in concert and snap a pic with them at their merch stand. -adds to my bucket list-
