‘John’s Worth’ #2 by Jonathan Chandler
This is John’s Worth #2 by Jonathan Chandler. John’s worth #1 came out two years ago and you couldn’t buy it alone, it came as part of the 4th volume of the Mould Map anthology so you are probably an ultimate hipster if you have both issues. These things aren’t exactly something you “just encounter” on the shelf of your local comic book store and take a chance on, I think you gotta have a serious hard on for comix to be collecting shit like this. This, the 2nd issue, comes from Breakdown Press, who put out awesome awesome books and I believe are also doing a distro deal with Fantagraphics to put out their stuff in the states so this stuff will hopefully be getting to a wider audience. Anytime I tell someone I’m into comics and they ask me if I’ve read ‘Sandman’ or Jimmy Corrigan I want to punch them in the face. Look in the back of the catalog, fuckwad, buy the weird stuff they’re bringing in from other lands.
John’s Worth #1 started off as a bit of a departure for Chandler as some of the pages almost had panels, or sometimes more than one image per page. Chandler’s approach is a very “folk art” or “intuitive” method of comix making that gives this here reviewer a chubby for miles. I don’t know his process but he seems to be of the “first idea is the best idea” ilk, the kind that have enough talent to pull that off.
This tale, his first attempt at an episodic series that I know of, that hopefully doesn’t continue to go 2 years in between issues because jesus fucking christ I didn’t remember the story by the time I got to reading #2, really reminds me of Naked Lunch. The movie, not the book. Real hardcore intensifying scenes that are all about jacking into some weird ass shit that looks to be a bit technology and a bit living organism. 2 issues into the series we are barely offered a decent explanation on the scope of this world and the characters but I’m sure we’ll get there. For now the reader must watch some gory stuff go down and enjoy the ride, hopefully.
So, can’t wait till 2032 when the 3rd issue comes out. Buy this one from the fantastic Breakdown Press today!!! http://www.breakdownpress.com/store/
