The First State Bed of Henry VII & Elizabeth of York
This documentary is surprisingly informative and allows you to get a visual sense of the story told by such a stunning work of art. The panels do not represent Adam and Eve, on the contrary, we find the carved figures of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York themselves joined in matrimony to overcome sin through the union of their houses. From the biblical themes that were so characteristic of medieval catholic times, to additions made to fit the reformation years, to the European style that Henry VII would have been familiar with and would have introduced in England, it is astounding how so much history an object can tell.
