honestly one of the best things we can do for ourselves is realize that people of different ages than us can still be the same kind of person as us. it's humbling and it gives everyone involved a sense of continuity, and it busts those stupid generational stereotypes media is so fond of.

Some writing advice I will never give up:
Your characters are allowed to be bad people. Your story is allowed to have no moral lesson.yyour ending is allowed to be sad. The villain can win. The good person can do something unforgivable. The lovers can destroy each other. You are allowed to write the thing that no one asked for and everything that everyone told you doesn’t work and you are allowed to not explain yourself.
It’s your story. Burn it down if you want to.
i think one of the reasons i dont vibe with a lot of modern "romantic" writing is that there's a notable lack of sweetness or tenderness written between the characters. the most popular tropes for intimacy negotiation between characters in modern romantic novels seem to be based around overcoming their own disdain, distrust, or resentment of the other character. an increasingly lazy, kneejerk "i hate how much i want them" approach to romantic and physical intimacy. true love requires doubt, they tell us. our desires can only be trusted when we douse them in cold hard rationality. no i'm not trying to come for the enemies rivals irritating workplace acquaintances to lovers trope that's so popular (although i'm also deeply bored by that). rather, i think it demonstrates a general jadedness in a genre that's otherwise supposed to be about "wish fulfillment HEA" yet struggles to conceive characters for whom tenderness and all-consuming desire is not a weakness. the irrationality that love can instill in a person is held at arm's length, a toxic impulse that must be adjusted in order to present a "healthy relationship." the overly-emotional lover has been relegated to "dark romance," or their behaviors channeled into specific genre-approved tropes which fit neatly into hetero-dominant relationship expectations. so much of it ends up reading pathos-less to me. in the hands of a talented writer, unhinged tenderness is the most excruciating possible thing to read. we used to have that, you know. we used to be a society.
Part of the reason mainstream enemies to lovers is so fucking boring is because its all about the physical, and never about the emotional or the growth or the learning.
Its always "He's so incredibly hot, but he's an asshole. But he's sooooooo hot that I can't help but be into him anyway. I mean I hate his guts but also he makes me feel squiggly inside because he's so unfairly attractive," and -- no!!! Boring!!!!!!
Give me characters for whom being attracted to the other person is never even considered, because it doesnt matter what their features are like, the hate for each other or the political opposition of each other or the diametrically opposed goals are the only thing that fills the character's mind whenever they think of the other. And then give me those characters having to work together despite their mutual staunch opposition, and coming to know and trust each other in spite of all the reasons they shouldn't, and then being surprised to find that they actually occasionally enjoy one another's company, and THEN come in with the attraction.
Which also!! If written well should also include the intimacy that OP was talking about!! Little domestic moments before the romance even starts! Fetching a coffee for the other person or lighting a new candle when theirs gets low because youre both up late researching something together that impacts both your lives despite your enmity. Gradually becoming more physically familiar -- when they first met they wouldnt so much as shake hands but now they touch the other's arm to get their attention and stand shoulder to shoulder when facing a mutual threat. Little things like knowing what the other's favourite beverage or meal is, or little details like how they like their workstation set up or what their favourite pen is. Tending the other's injury, and its not even Charged (TM), its just gentle and caring or its perfunctory and effective but either way it serves as yet another link in thr bridge of trust they're building. And thats just BASIC tenderness; that's not even getting into the realm of the unhinged sort that OP was talking about, which first of all is delicious but secondly is also more flavoursome when it comes before the romance ---- and all of this is LEAGUES better than the depth-devoid "I hate how much i want him" approach. Enemies to lovers is a GOOD TROPE but boring writers who think that physical attraction is all there is to a relationship got a hold of it and theyre turning it into bland boring blah, and I'm mad about it
