PS AROUND THE WORLD Petite Sirah has somewhat of a cult following with some of us wine geeks, but outside of that the popularity declines drastically. Currently there are less than 10,000 acres worldwide. This grape originally made its home in France, but it is nearly nonexistent there now. The United States is the largest grower of Petite Sirah with California dominating as the primary region. From what we found the next largest producing country would be our friends down under in Australia. Other areas that produce notable Petite Sirah are Israel, Mexico, Chile, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina. If you notice you will see a trend with these areas...warm growing regions.

NEW RELEASE OF CHARDONNAY! If you ask us there is no better way to welcome the New Year than with a delicious new vintage of Chardonnay! The 2015 Chardonnay is now available at our tasting rooms, just in time to welcome 2018 in style. This wine has a polished touch of American oak that adds a complexity and nuances to this wine. Aromas of ripe banana, lemon custard, fresh pineapple and a subtle vanilla note jump off this wine. On the palate, it's bone dry with notes of grilled pineapple, Golden Delicious apple, lemon zest and Bosc pear. PLATINUM FOR 2015 RIESLING WinePress Northwest, is a magazine publication that focuses on just that…Northwest Wine. Their annual Platinum Judging competition was first established in 2000 as a way to determine some of the best wines of the Pacific Northwest. This year’s competition included 650+, with each wine having to meet certain requirements in order to be eligible for the competition. In 2017, Northwest wineries were awarded more than 2,300 gold medals at professional judgings. These wines are categorized and judged blind during three days by three panels of wine experts, who award wines with Double Platinum, Platinum, Double Gold and Best Buy. A wine is awarded a medal based on how a majority of the judges voted. We are pleased to announce that our 2015 Riesling was awarded a Platinum Medal with a ‘Best Buy’ distinction! From the remarks it sounds like the judges were fans…”aromas of river rocks make way for peaches and cream, pear, dried pineapple and sweet nectarine. Brisk acidity allows it to stay true from start to its beautifully lifted finish.” Over the 18 years of this competition’s existence Jones of Washington has tallied 14 Platinum Medals putting us in some elite company. Also in this year’s competition our 2014 Chardonnay and 2015 Sauvignon Blanc were awarded Double Gold Medals along with Gold Medals for the 2013 Syrah and 2015 Pinot Gris. #6 2012 CABERNET SAUVIGNON vs. #15 2016 ROSÉ OF SYRAH Recap – The Quincy Regional Final wasn’t much of a contest as the Cinderella journey continues for the #15 Rosé of Syrah and it boat raced the 2012 Merlot. The fans of the Rosé came strong and voted this wine into the Final 4! In the Wahluke Slope Region the #6 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon had more of a struggle, but came out on top over the #14 2015 Pinot Gris. Preview – In a match up for a birth into the championship contest, there is a favorite on paper, but that’s as far as it goes. The #6 seed 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon has all the right pieces to win this Final 4 matchup…the history, the pedigree and the awards. The #15 2016 Rosé of Syrah will definitely have to bring it’s A game if it wants to pull off this upset, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it did. The Rosé finds itself back in the Final 4 as the only wine to reach it again from last year. It will be really interesting to see how the fans vote in this matchup. Will the delicate and crowd favorite Rosé of Syrah have enough to overcome the top dog varietal in the wine world? Only time will tell! Players To Watch – All eyes are on the 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon. It will take a huge effort from this wine to move into the championship game and past the rosé. They say that stars shine brightest on the big stage and this a big stage for the Cab. Cab is still king in the wine world, especially in Washington. It accounts for 26% of the total wine grapes harvested in the state with over 71,000 tons picked in 2016. Key Stats – Take a look at the technical data on the 2016 Rosé of Syrah: 13.1% ABV (alcohol by volume), 1.6% residual sugar & a total acidity of .66…which are all the right stats for a consumer friendly rosé. These ‘stats’ have the ’16 Rosé of Syrah in the Final Four for a reason and it looks to continue its magical run as the highest remaining seeded wine.

#1 2012 BARREL SELECT vs. #5 2015 SAUVIGNON BLANC Recap – The #1 seed, the 2012 Barrel Select, pulled out a win late in the game against #8 2015 Viognier in the Ancient Lakes Regional Final to earn a spot in the Jones of Washington Final 4. In the Wenatchee Regional Final it was the #5 2015 Sauvignon Blanc making it a fairly easy win over the underdog #13 2013 Petit Verdot. Preview – For the second year in a row we have the #1 wine vs. the #5 wine in the first semifinal game. The top-seeded wine, the 2012 Barrel Select, hasn’t really had a close matchup in our tournament this far, but it hasn’t faced an opponent like the #5 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. Both wines are showing at a really high level right now, so we are in for a great matchup! This is your classic White Wine vs. Red Wine battle. How will our Jones of Washington fans vote…we will have to wait and see! Players To Watch – It comes down to the ‘Big 3’ for the 2012 Barrel Select. Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) leads the way with this wine, with his trusty sidekicks Carménère (22%) and Syrah (8%) ready to help where they can. Everybody loves a red blend nowadays and there is no exception here. This unique blend will use its fruit forward prowess and integrated tannins to overpower its opponents in an epic Final 4 match. Key Stats – It will be interesting to see if past and current awards and an impressive body of work will carry weight for the 2015 Sauvignon Blanc. The gaining popularity of this varietal is sure to help as well. With over 275,000 acres of this grape planted worldwide, it seems that Sauvignon Blanc is making a push in popularity…and it appears to be the same in our tournament! Sauvignon Blanc is now the third most harvested white grape in the state of Washington with over 10,000 tons being picked in the 2016 harvest and there are many different styles of Sauv. Blanc out there…which makes this a really fun wine.
