~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You always hated coming home early.
Too quiet. Too much time to think. But tonight, you wish you’d stayed late.The house is warm, dim. Quiet at first. Then—laughter. Muffled. Feminine. You freeze halfway down the hallway, keys still in hand. The sound comes again, breathy, giggly. Intimate. It’s coming from your bedroom.
Your bedroom.
Your fingers numb as you set your bag down.You tell yourself it’s nothing. A misunderstanding. He’s on the phone. You’re imagining it.
But then you hear it. A moan. And the deep murmur of his voice. His voice.
Something inside you breaks.
Your feet move without thinking. You push the bedroom door open. Slowly. Silently.
You wish you’d screamed. Maybe it would’ve hurt less.
She’s straddling him. His hands are on her hips. Her bra is on the floor. The sheets are a mess.
Your sheets.
He looks up, startled. His mouth opens like he’s going to say your name.
You run.
~~~~~~~~~~~
You don’t know how you get to Baek’s apartment. Maybe it’s muscle memory. Maybe it’s instinct.
He’s Jong-In’s old friend. Former guild partner. One of the only people who actually saw what you and Jong-In looked like before marriage turned into this tightrope walk of guilt and glass.
You’re crying so hard you can barely knock.
The door yanks open, and Baek stares at you like he’s seeing a ghost.
“Y/N?”
You fall into his chest.
He catches you without hesitation.
He doesn’t ask you anything right away. Just brings you inside, hands gentle as he guides you to the couch.You’re curled into yourself, knees tight to your chest, sobs still stuck in your throat. Baek crouches in front of you, his eyes sharp, scanning your face like he’s checking for injuries.
“What happened?” he says quietly. You open your mouth. Nothing comes out. So you just whisper, “He cheated.”
Baek’s face hardens.
You continue, voice shaking, “She was in our bed. Like it was nothing. I—I saw it. I saw them.”
And then you’re crying again.
But this time Baek doesn’t hesitate. He wraps his arms around you, strong and protective, pulling you into his chest like he can absorb some of the pain. He doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t give you pity or platitudes. Just holds you while your world crumbles.
~~~~~~~~~
It’s hours later when there’s a knock at the door.
You’re in one of Baek’s hoodies now, curled on his couch, eyes red and raw. You stiffen when you hear the knock.
Baek glances at you. You shake your head.
He walks to the door, calm and slow.
When he opens it, you hear a voice that turns your stomach.
“Where is she?”
Jong-In.
Baek doesn’t move. “Leave.”
“I need to see her,” Jong-In snaps.
Baek’s voice doesn’t rise. “You don’t need shit.”
You curl tighter into the hoodie, heart thundering.
“She’s my wife.”
“You should’ve thought about that before you brought someone else into her bed.”
There’s a pause.
Then Jong-In’s voice, low, desperate. “I messed up. I—I was going to tell her. It didn’t mean anything. It just happened—”
“Cut the bullshit,” Baek says sharply. “She doesn’t want to see you.”
“I need to explain!” “No. You need to leave.” Another beat of silence.”I still love her.” You feel sick.
Baek slams the door in his face.
He turns to you slowly, cautious like he’s handling something fragile. You don’t say anything. Just stare at the closed door.
“He looked like hell,” Baek mutters. “Good.”
You exhale shakily. “Do you think I should’ve talked to him?”
Baek walks over and sits beside you. “No.”
Your hands fidget in your lap.
“I keep thinking this is a dream. A nightmare.”
Baek leans back against the couch, arm draped along the top. “It’s not. But I’m here.” You rest your head against the cushion, tears stinging your eyes again.
“I don’t know what to do.”
He turns his head toward you. “You don’t have to know. Just don’t go back. Not yet. Not until you can breathe.”You nod. Baek doesn’t press. He doesn’t try to fix it. He just stays.
The next morning
You wake up to the smell of coffee.
Baek’s already up, dressed in a worn t-shirt and joggers, mug in one hand, flipping through the news on his tablet. He glances up as you shuffle into the room.
“You sleep okay?”
You nod, even if it’s a lie.
He holds out the coffee. “I made it the way you like. Hazelnut and cinnamon.”
You take it.
The warmth in your hands makes you feel human again.
“I don’t know what I’d do if you weren’t here,” you admit.
He gives a small smile. “You’d still survive. You’re tougher than you think.”
~~~~~~~~~
Later that afternoon, Jong-In texts.
Jong-In: Please talk to me. I’m not giving up on us.
Then again.
Jong-In: You’re still my wife. We can fix this.
You stare at your phone for a long time. Then you hand it to Baek.
He looks at it, frowns, then blocks the number.
“Don’t let him manipulate you,” he says. “He’s not sorry. He’s just afraid of losing control.”
You exhale. “That’s exactly how it feels.”
“Good,” Baek says. “Then we’re on the same page.”
