Uhhh, they're gonna circle around the enemy army and harrass them with bows right? Because that would def be better use for mounted troops than having them stand still and wait for the slowly advancing spearwall.
A pincer attack was indeed the plan, based on their success in a war with the empire 13 years earlier. Unfortunately, in the interim the empire apparently invented field artillery.
Even without perfect knowledge of the empire’s capabilities, from my point of view, giving battle here is perilous. Your cavalry’s ability to maneuver is constrained by the mountainous terrain and the empire is already in formation. They’re 200% more prepared for a fight. He’s right that escape is harder with the enemy army right in front of him, but I still think it’s the better move.
Seeing how another season of Mix: Meisei Story is winding down, do you have an opinion on its predecessor show, Touch?
(Or interest in watching it?)
I think Mix is still going for another cour, so we still have a few months.
I wouldn't mind sitting through Touch, but part of me wonders if it's different enough to give me something that Mix doesn't already. My sense is that the slice-of-life elements are where Adachi's stuff really shines, but if it's gonna be idiot brothers again, I only have so much of that in me, y'know? Plus, the dramatic twist is the stuff of sports anime legend so I'll know it's coming.

Best tactic in those conditions would be a short clash with the enemy, followed by a false retreat to invite the enemy into a pursuit and draw them into an ambush in difficult terrain, where the natural formations can isolate the advancing troops from the artillery's cover. Though if the empire chose the field of battle, they likely would know to avoid dangerous terrain. Then retreat might indeed be the wisest move.
Also, that kind of strategy heavily relies on the enemy's willingness to pursuit which given that they'd be running into their own artillery's line of fire is unlikely.
Yeah. In the empire’s case, the whole idea behind presenting Halil Pasha with the same formation was to goad him into using the same tactic. It’s worth mentioning that the artillery was really just some siege equipment hastily repurposed for flank defense, which Pino was relying on to let him focus on encircling the cavalry attacking the front. But even then... like... I’m not aware of any effort being taken to scout the enemy during the few days they were trying to outmaneuver each other, or even while they were staring each other down near Cielo.
So I feel like even before considering what we the audience knew about the unknown unknowns, the lack of caution is the biggest error here: Halil committed to a full two-pronged assault without knowing the enemy’s capabilities. But I guess these things tend to happen when you innovate in the field.
Happy b-day, Muti!!!
thank you!!!!!!!
