To celebrate the twentieth year of Robert Baratheon’s reign, a date which happily coincides with Arya Stark’s fourteenth birthday, a great tourney is held at Lannisport, and all the lords of Westeros and their families are invited. Ned Stark brings his children, Robb, Sansa and Arya, as well as his bastard son Jon Snow, and his ward, Theon Greyjoy. Lady Stark remains in Winterfell with their youngest sons, Bran and Rickon.
Sansa is enthralled by the crown prince, Joffrey Baratheon, though the other Starks regard him with healthy disdain. Robb, Theon and Jon enjoy the spectacle, watching some of their heroes batter each other with lance and in the melee, though Arya is upset that she is not allowed to compete herself. As always, Jon finds a way to cheer her up.
After dark, they sneak out to practice with the knights’ swords. Eventually, they are discovered by the Queen’s brothers, Jaime and Tyrion, who find kindred spirits among the siblings and agree not to say anything. They grow closer as the tourney continues, and, when Jaime wins the final joust, everyone is shocked, appalled or amused, to see him crown Arya as Queen of Love and Beauty, in honour of her fourteenth name-day.
If Jon were allowed to compete, he would have made the same choice.
