I love Oak in Hamilton, but he doesn't even get his own song. If you add up all his lines it might be a few minutes at best, so you can't use that argument. Everyone in that show is A+. I've been lucky to see it many times and I would be thrilled with any nomination for any of them. You can be mad Oak wan't nominated, but not at the expense of anyone else. They are all deserving. And Groff's 9 minutes or whatever is a comedic scene stealer. Those roles often get recognition. Whatever the medium.
This is like the fifth message I’ve gotten, but you’ve been the only one who feels the need to hide their identity, which let’s me publish it to the world. Let’s break this down and go bit by bit, okay?
“I love Oak in Hamilton, but he doesn’t even get his own song” yeah, true, he gets his own verses that are almost as long as Groff’s reprises, but he doesn’t get his own song, I get it, you’ve got a point here
“If you add up all his lines it might be a few minutes at best, so you can’t use that argument” Okay, buddy, I’m taking your point away again. Groff is on stage for his song and it’s two reprises and a super brief scene where he struts across the stage and right off again. Oak has many lines in many songs, and that’s not even all the time he spends on stage! Just go to this link, don’t worry, this answer will wait while you peruse. There are a few songs on there that aren’t in the current broadway production, but that’s okay, there’s plenty without those. Even if Oak only has one or two lines, he’s in the whole scene most of the time. He’s on stage so much, so actually, I think you can’t use that argument.
“Everyone in that show is A+” Yeah! They are! They really really are. The show is phenomenal and so are all of the actors in the show. Not a single person is a poor choice to be in the part they play, from Lin to John Rua and Hope Easterbrook. I agree with you here, you can have like, half of your point back, because this is a good point, but it doesn’t have much to do with my point.
“I’ve been lucky to see it many times and I would be thrilled with any nomination for any of them” I’m really glad you’ve gotten to see it multiple times when most people can’t even see it once because tickets are scarce and expensive. Having seen it many times, you should know that Oak is there a lot more than just a few minutes. I’ve never seen it, but I’ve listened to the soundtrack and seen any clips that have been released, and I’m fairly certain that Oak doesn’t sing/say his lines from off-stage, but hey! maybe he does, I haven’t seen it. Yeah, I’d be thrilled with any other nomination for Groff. Let Oak or Anthony have the Tony nom. Everybody’s acting as though the Tonys are the only awards Hamilton is going to get. As if it hasn’t already won a ton of awards and won’t keep winning awards until it isn’t eligible anymore. Groff’s pretty, young, and white. He has so many more chances. Literally 85% or more of Broadway roles are open to him. He can do whatever he wants. He’s Broadway’s sweetheart. No points.
“You can be mad Oak wan’t nominated, but not at the expense of anyone else” Okay, say goodbye to your half point and remove like 5 more. I can be pissed about anything I want to be. I love Jonathan Groff dearly. I have loved him since Spring Awakening and Glee. All of my friends thought I was crazy because ‘Jesse St James is a bad guy!!!!!!!’ but they didn’t understand that I didn’t care because it was Jonathan Groff. So, as a huge fan of his, he was the last person who should’ve gotten nominated. Out of the 10 main actors/actresses in Hamilton, how many didn’t get nominated? 3. THREE. Jasmine, Anthony, and Oak. I think Jasmine could’ve gotten the nomination for featured actress, but if only one from Ham could get it, Elise deserved it. Anthony or Oak should’ve gotten the nom before Groff. The post could’ve just as easily been about Anthony. He played a nine year old for godssake!
“They are all deserving” Yes, we’ve covered this. See above where I say how great they all are. See the original post where I say Groff is deserving of every Tony. See above where I say that he is the last person in this show that should’ve been nominated. Not meaning that he shouldn’t be, just that Oak and/or Anthony should’ve been nominated first. Hamilton couldn’t take all five nomination spots. 3 was crazy enough.
“And Groff’s 9 minutes or whatever is a comedic scene stealer. Those roles often get recognition. Whatever the medium” Let’s just lump these together. I don’t know how many times I have to tell everyone that I love Jonathan Groff. I think he is a brilliant actor who should’ve gotten the Tony for Spring Awakening. He is great and I love him. His comedic acting is great. His dramatic acting is great. He’s fucking amazing when he does his King George stuff. The coronation video had me in tears I was laughing so hard i love jonathan groff. Okay, do we understand now??? Please see above where I say he should get other awards just not this Tony because I’m tired and I don’t want to repeat myself again.
Edit: Can I also just say that pretty much everyone who has reblogged this has tagged it with agreements. Like, everyone is saying “I love groff, but this is true” or “this!!” or “i’m bitter but this is true” Like, it’s not just me saying this.
Edit #2: Please turn your attention to the 2016 Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards where Groff is, yes, nominated for Best Featured Actor (but so is Anthony!!!) but he’s also nominated for Favorite Funny Performance, Favorite Diva Performance. So yeah, you know, let Groff win those. Also, there’s a category for breakout star, which has Oak, Daveed, and Anthony, so I think the Tonys should take notes and add that category????? I’m tired and bitter. You would think I’m 85 instead of 19. Only nineteen but my mind is older? nah, I’m just bitter as hell
If you or anyone else has any questions/hate mail/death threats/just want to comment, feel free to send them in an ask/instant message and I’ll get back to you after a long nap where Jonathan Groff in his full king costume will likely parade through my nightmares throwing copies of this and all the other messages I’ve gotten at me. Thank you.
