Recording with Mad Blackbirds
I had a really fun and interesting session on Sunday with Mad Blackbirds.
The final Music Production major project at Berklee is to produce three songs with a band. My friend Ben Walding is in his last semester at school, and we're doing that project with him. We were in Berklee's "Studio A" to record two of the three songs: In This Town, We Don't Say Sorry and Optimism Isn't Easy.
We went with an unusual recording method for This Town by recording the whole band at once. Drums, bass, guitar, and vocals were ALL tracked in one continuous take. This is very uncommon, especially when it comes to vocals, but we thought that the song would have a great feel that way.
Here's a picture of the blueprint for the studio layout:
It was hard to get a great picture with so much stuff in the room but here is what it looked like while setting up (we added more isolation between where jake stands / sings and the bass amp):
That's Jorel Corpus, who engineered the session and was awesome.
Both songs ended up sounding really good and we'll be working on them more in the next few weeks. I'm hopeful that we will be able to release something by the end of 2012.
On the other hand if you want to be ahead of the curve then Mad Blackbirds has its debut show coming up on November 9th.
