Hmmm
Walky: Joe, we can do the funniest thing right now
Joe: Walky no.
Walky: Come on man, I'll be the bottom
Joe I-no!
Walky: Okay what if… I dress like a girl?
Joe: …
J O Y C E
I like reading Dumbing of Age because instead of being anxious about... everything
I can forget about all that, and instead be anxious about whether or not Joyce and Dorothy are gonna kiss
Dorothy: S-so… how was your night with Joe?
Joyce: Fine! Great! I mean, we didn’t… I’m still… HE ONLY USED HIS FINGERS!
Dorothy: Oh, c’mon, Joyce! *I* could have done that!
Joyce: [stares, blushes]
Dorothy: [stares, blushes]
IT HAS BEGIN
One of the few problems I still do legitimately have with the Joyce/Dorothy ship is that Dorothy's seemingly incessant need to constantly try to Change Joyce hasn't ever really been addressed.
Like, I get why she has that instinct. Joyce has only just recently gotten out of her Christian fundamentalist and upbringing and despite now being a self-identified atheist she still has a lot of extremely negative culturally Christian biases that she hasn't really unpacked and needs to unlearn, and she does genuinely need Dorothy's help to point out her blind spots.
But sometimes it feels like Dorothy kind of over-reaches and tries to 'correct' behaviors or beliefs that are ultimately harmless and just different from the way Dorothy sees the world. And considering a lot of Joyce's trauma and repression stem from being told what to think and believe, if or when this aspect of their dynamic does get explored it will be absolutely juicy (as long as it still ends happily, I don't want them permanently breaking up) but honestly I'm not sure if that's going to actually be a plot point or if that's just supposed to be read as Dorothy unquestionably and unambiguously helping Joyce.
LIKE. LOOK. okay, i'm putting the caps away.
look. I'd always figured it was just jokes. i've read shortpacked. and like, i loved how gay DOA is, but dear fuck.
but like. when we got to the comic strip arc. and we got that comment about queerbaiting.
A Tiny Antenna Pinged. Cause. That whole thing was META AF. and if joyce is ms. fighter jet captain. and dorothy is madame president. and the comic itself is commenting on queerbaiting.
and i'd fallen off the DOA wagon for a couple of years, cause of a new computer and laziness and lack of spoons.
but hearing the girls got together made me speedrun back.
