Night Visions: The Secret Designs of Moths
Joseph Scheer
Prestel 2003
Using a high-resolution scanner and digital printing technology, Joseph Scheer brings forth the incredible range, delicacy, and vibrance of moths. While he is not a lepidopterist, but rather a professor of print media, all of the specimens in the book are from his extensive collection. Originally the work in this book began as a fine art installation that turned into a large-scale bio-diversity project. With intense detail images that display the dynamic pixilated marvel of moth coloring, Scheer brings an artist’s eye to an under appreciated insect. And while I generally dislike oblong books, this one makes sense. At 12” x 13.5”, this is a gorgeous book with over 200 spectacular images that are sure to evoke wonder and awe.
Maybe it’s a controversial opinion, but moths are just prettier than butterflies.
