Jot 'Em Down (Athens, GA)
If you're in or near Athens, and you crave some good pulled pork like I do...JOT 'EM DOWN is calling your name. This past week, I actually went twice - clearly, I'm ignoring the fact that Spring Break is a mere two weeks away.
Now listen, I know everyone has their biases toward their BBQ, and I'm the last person to criticize when it comes to food (that's actually a completely false statement), but I encourage everyone to have an open mind when crossing state lines to try something new. Being from southern Alabama, I grew up on the tomato-based sauce - one of my personal favorites. Interestingly, this southern Alabama sauce is different from the traditional white mayonnaise-based sauce of northern Alabama. In North Carolina, you've got your vinegar-based, typically very thin sauce; South Carolina is home of the ever-delicious (yet very different) mustard-based sauce; we know that Texas is home of Bevo-style BBQ (and by "Bevo-style", I mean beef) and Salt Lick, and they wouldn't have it ANY other way. (Note: if you've never ordered ribs in Texas, I highly recommend it- at least for a good laugh). The sauce of the Mid-West is a bit spicier and a bit sweeter than most regions; Memphis...well, experience it for yourself. BUT AT LAST, Georgia....
Georgia's traditional sauce is typically both vinegar and tomato-based. Made right, it's the perfect balance of both. Two of my top three favorite barbecue joints are located here in the beautiful peach state. Jot 'Em Down (the other two being Fincher's (Macon, GA) and Moe's (located in various Alabama and Colorado locations; Ashville, NC; Atlanta, Ga)) is the place to go in Athens. Located on Macon Highway, the friendly staff are SO welcoming (as should always be the case when eating BBQ!), and they won't let you get out of there without a bowl of Banana Pudding or Chocolate Pecan Pie. Oh, and trust me, you don't want to get out of there without a bowl of Banana Pudding or Chocolate Pecan Pie.
It's one of those BBQ joints in which you really can't go wrong-even when a blasphemous person (not naming any names) ordered damn chicken fingers, they were TOP NOTCH. I'll rarely pass up pulled pork for any other form of BBQ, and I can say that's the case here. There's about 7 different sauces on the table, ranging in spiciness and origin - you've got your South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia sauces, plus a few more just to keep you entertained. And what would a pulled pork sandwich or a slab of ribs be without baked beans, Brunswick stew or coleslaw? I tell you what, DON'T skimp on the sides here, people, I promise you'll regret it. And, of course, the finishing touch? WHITE BREAD. Jot 'Em Down, congratulations! You are one of the many, many, many reasons I'm not a vegetarian.
