Important Dates in Taco History
A general timeline of the events that lead up to our sluttiness...
1931: The Los Angeles restaurant El Cholo opens and allegedly serves the first taco in America.
1946: First Taco Bell opens in San Bernardino, Calif.
1949: The hard-shell, U-shaped taco is first described in a cookbook authored by Fabiola Cabeza de Vaca Gilbert.
1980: Local fast food taco joint Amigos opens first location.
July 21, 2009: The Taco Bell Chihuahua, Gidget, has a stroke and dies at age 15.
Dec. 24, 2009: A Bexar County, Texas, jail employee is arrested after investigators learn that he smuggled tacos containing hacksaw blades to an inmate in exchange for Xanax pills.
July 14, 2010: Man uploads video to YouTube showing him eating a Taco Bell taco with a Dorito shell. Delicious.
Aug. 28, 2010: The members of Lincoln touring favorite The Hood Internet create the Album Tacos tumblr page. Tacos have since been tastefully photoshopped onto Smashing Pumpkins album covers.
March 2011: Trent Larkey and Jacklynn Wiggins, two Riverton, Wyo., high school students, place second in the 2011 West-Mex Culinary Competition conducted by Taco John's and the Wyoming Lodging and Restaurant Association with their creation, The S'more Burrito.
Nov. 24, 2011: Thanksgiving -- the only Thursday of the year Knickerbockers won't sell tacos.
