the $50k ntdp early exit fee is so outrageous to me lmao. i guess most hockey families are in a much higher tax bracket than me and might not be instantly thrust into financial ruin, but that's still got to be quite the financial disincentive to leave. a few high-profile players have left the program in recent years (g. sawchyn and jp hurlbert to the whl, some players to college who i don't remember) and i can't help but wonder if more would do the same if the cost to get out wasn't what some families make in a year. the program has lost some shine over the past few cycles and some of those kids in the bottom 6 probably aren't too happy with their playing situation. who knows.
hmm I can see both sides of reasoning for the exit fee tbh. at over $4mil a year budget across 2 teams of 23 players, they’re operating at about $100k per player per season. so a $50k exit fee is really just recouping the costs of half a season!
but yes it is a disincentive to leave, by design. on the ntdp side, it’s advantageous because it helps ensure roster continuity and player commitment. on the player and family side, it could become an extra pressure on a young teen to stay in something that’s making him miserable (beyond the already enormous social and reputational pressure to stick things out as a hockey player).
bottom 6 in the ntdp is sooo interesting to me!! for example, hunter mckown said after the Program he wanted to ‘get that attention’ (from coaching staff) and ‘regain’ his confidence with the puck. x
players who exit early…would love to pick their brains!! wanna know how the rumblings make their way through the hockey grapevine pleeease
