From September 1 – October 4 2023, the Christian family united worldwide in prayer and action for creation during the Season of Creation.

St Francis of Assisi may have changed the world, but he was just a man who lived the Gospel in a radical way. October 4 is the Feast of St Francis of Assisi (the patron saint of ecology) and the conclusion of the 2023 Season of Creation. We pray with St Francis for all of creation, the poor and peace in our world.

“Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; and you give light through him. And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendour! Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness. Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars; in the heavens you have made them, precious and beautiful. Dear brothers and sisters!

“Let Justice and Peace Flow” is the theme of this year’s ecumenical Season of Creation, inspired by the words of the prophet Amos: “Let justice flow on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (5:24).

The evocative image used by Amos speaks to us of what God desires. God wants justice to reign; it is as essential to our life as God’s children made in his likeness as water is essential for our physical survival. This justice must flow forth wherever it is needed, neither remaining hidden deep beneath the ground nor vanishing like water that evaporates before it can bring sustenance. God wants everyone to strive to be just in every situation, to live according to his laws and thus to enable life to flourish. When we “seek first the kingdom of God” (Mt 6:33), maintaining a right relationship with God, humanity and nature, then justice and peace can flow like a never-failing stream of pure water, nourishing humanity and all creatures.

And so it is that the Australia & Timor Leste Province has concluded its Chapter and our Justice Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Commission becomes open to a new team. After 13 years on this team I will no longer be serving in this ministry acknowledging that it is time for a change, but grateful that the passion is still burning for God’s work in helping to make the world a better place. It has been enlivening and a privilege to bring before you the need for all of us to live out our faith in justice and in peace, as demonstrated with the vision and inspiring words of Pope Francis’, captured so beautifully in ‘Let us Dream’. I would like to acknowledge the persistent and dedicated work of those in the previous JPIC Team: Peter Thomas, Josh Vujcich, Paul Sireh O.Carm and past member Agedo Bento O.Carm. I also pay tribute to one of our JPIC supporters, Peter Clarke, a local in my home Parish of SS Peter & Paul Kiama. Peter, recently deceased, was a great support to myself and Carmelite JPIC offering encouragement and writing several articles over the years, sharing his environmental knowledge and passion, activism, and love of Gospel values. He has shown us the face of God in his genuine love of creation and all that is good on our planet. Greetings to our Family and Friends in Carmel Violence and conflict in many areas of society throughout the world is very troubling and can bring on despair and disempowerment in all of us. It is very encouraging to see that this year’s Social Justice Statement helps us to draw on the insights of our faith and that of Pope Francis to feel as if we can help make our world a better place. Peter Thomas, JPIC Team member, helps us to raise our own awareness to this problem with extracts from the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement, Respect: Confronting Violence and Abuse. The attention given to this societal problem also aligns with that of the United Nation’s Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked every year on 25th November. There is much that we can do, once we embrace the world and its shadow side with all the wisdom our faith can give us. As Christians we are called to accept the world as a sacrament of communion, as a way of sharing with God and our neighbours on a global scale. It is our humble conviction that the divine and the human meet in the slightest detail in the seamless garments of God’s creation, in the least speck of dust of our planet (LS #9) These papal words are so exciting. They fling wide the doors of our imagination. Nothing is impossible with God. We look ahead in anticipation to the next few months with important global meetings and local initiatives to help heal the world, to help restore our planet to its original intent of being a healthy home for all to live. Welcome to Season of Creation Week 4 Download our Season of Creation Resources at: https://carmelites.org.au/jpic “Merciful God and Creator of all, We praise You for the gift of the earth, Home to so many forms of life the common home of peoples...” (Laudato Si Prayer Book) During the Season of Creation, our common prayer and action can help us listen for the voices of those who are silenced. In prayer we lament the individuals, communities, species, and ecosystems who are lost, and those whose livelihoods are threatened by habitat loss and climate change. In prayer we centre the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor. Listening to the voice of creation offers members of the Christian family a rich entry point for interfaith and interdisciplinary dialogue and practice. Christians walk a shared path as those who hold different kinds of knowledge and wisdom in all cultures and sectors of life.
