"Oh, I see, my apologies. But don't despair, you don't have to know it."

"Kyubey": "I acknowledge that it's not easy to believe." "But I think if you met one of the Magical Girls that lives in this city…" "You'll understand that what I'm saying is true."

"Nagisa narration": "I always loved reading tragedies. My heart always felt a little bit lighter while I was reading those kind of stories." "Nothing good would happen to anyone, regardless of whether they're good or bad. But no matter what terrible events occurred, the tragedy could be wrapped up with the two words, "The End "." "I would feel saved, somehow, by reading those words."

"Kyubey": "Most humans would jump at the chance to have any wish granted." "Some wouldn't mind at all if they exchanged their lives for their wish to come true."

"Nagisa": "Why don't you just grant your own wish?" "If you think it's so wonderful, you should just become a Magical Girl yourself."

"My kind are incapable of having emotions as individuals." "We aren't cut out for that." "That's why we specifically seek out humans and scout them to become Magical Girls."

"Nagisa": "Emotions…" "Do emotions help you know what to wish for?"

"Nagisa "narration": "What kind of wish should I get granted?"

"Story Book Page": "A wish, a wish, a wonderful wish. "If I become a Magical Girl, he'll grant me a wish." "If you promise to kill Witches, I'll grant you one wish." Tell me, what is your wish?"

"Nagisa narration": "The only stories I've ever spent any time thinking about were tragedies. So, I had no idea what to say when I was suddenly asked about my desires and wishes. After all, the people who got their wishes granted in those stories ended up miserable. I don't want to become miserable." "There are things I don't want, and things I do want… If I wish for the opposite of a tragedy, will it become a happy story? I didn't know the answer."

[Nagisa's House Setting]

"Nagisa": "Your explanation doesn't make sense to me." "Besides, if I make a wish…" "It seems to suggest that I'm not satisfied with my life."

"Kyubey": "You don't seem to be all that healthy, for one." "Your home is dimly lit, and it's littered with garbage everywhere." "Compared to those around you, you aren't exactly wealthy." "Add to that your interpersonal relationships and circumstances." "One can refer to one's own circumstances, should they be below average… " "With the word "dissatisfied"." "Put in those terms, I think there aren't many elements of your life…" "…that you can say you aren't even slightly dissatisfied with."

"Nagisa": "That's not a very nice way to put it." "In any case, money does sound nice." "But I know what happens in my stories." "When people wish for money…" "It never ends well for them." "The proper way to obtain money is to happen upon it." "I also don't agree with using special powers to get things that aren't very special." "That seems like a waste."

"Kyubey": "You have a point." "It depends on how much money you need and if you don't mind damaging your name…" "But a Magical Girl's powers could solve financial problems to a certain extent."

"Nagisa": "What do you think, Kyubey?" "From your perspective, what do I most need to wish for?"

"Kyubey": "That's a difficult question…" "We have different standards and values than you humans."

"Nagisa": "It doesn't have to be your opinion." "You've made contracts with lots of people until now." "I'm sure you've met a human who is similar to me."

"Kyubey": "…"

"Nagisa": "You can't answer?"

"Kyubey": "Of course, I did profile you before approaching you." :"I know of several model cases with similar backgrounds and personalities." "They have similar circumstances, and are in similar geographical areas." "But I don't think you'll agree, even if I tell you what they wished for."

"Nagisa": "Were you listening in on me?" "I only said that because I didn't want to go with them." "The hospital is far away…" "I'm going to visit my mom the day after tomorrow."

"Kyubey": "I see. Then you're free." "Come with me." "I was hoping you could accompany a Magical Girl on a Witch hunt."

"Nagisa": "I'd really rather you let me know beforehand." "It's not like I'm free every day."

"Kyubey": "This Magical Girl is hard to get a hold of." "I know it's rather sudden." "But before you decide whether or not you want to become a Magical Girl…" "You should watch a battle against a Witch." "Will you come with me?"

"Nagisa": "Okay…"

[Afternoon, Playground Setting]

"Nagisa": "Are Witch hunts dangerous?"

"Kyubey": "Well…" "Even Magical Girls can get defeated, if they let their guard down." "But they must hunt Witches." "Otherwise, there will be more victims." "We can't just leave Witches running wild."

"Nagisa": "…"

"Kyubey": "And, we can't get Grief Seeds without defeating them." "Do you remember what I told you about Grief Seeds?"

"Nagisa": "You need them to restore magic, right?"

"Kyubey": "That's right." "Magical Girls fight Witches to save people's lives and prevent destruction." "Getting Grief Seeds is one of their other main objectives."

"Nagisa": "I know they have to get Grief Seeds." "That I understand." "But why do I have to save other people on top of that?"

"Kyubey": "Humans who aren't Magical Girls can't defend themselves from Witches." "If Magical Girls didn't fight Witches…" "Many people would be completely helpless against them."

"Nagisa": "Nobody ever helps me." "So why do I have to help others?"

"Kyubey": "…" "You make a valid point." "It's fine if you just help people when you feel like helping them." "Quite a few Magical Girls feel the same way, actually." "And that's fine." "I was only speaking from the perspective of typical human values." "I'm not going to force you to rescue people."

"Nagisa": "But what if I don't feel like helping them?" "If I don't help them, they might die BECAUSE I didn't help them." "It would be my fault." "I don't want to be responsible for killing anybody."

"Kyubey": "It's important to consider the risks, but…" "Don't you think you look at everything a little too pessimistically?" "Think of it this way." "If you defeat a Witch, you'll end up helping humans who were going to be attacked." "There's nothing bad about that, is there?" "Say 100 humans were going to be attacked." "And then you abandoned 99 of them." "By killing a Witch, you'd still be helping that remaining one person." "That would mean out of 100 people fated to die, only 99 of them did." "Nagisa": "So, when is this Magical Girl supposed to arrive?" "Shouldn't she be here by now?"

"Kyubey": "Strange." "She was nearby the last time I checked…" "I didn't tell her I was bringing you, Nagisa." "Maybe she's being cautious because of that."

"Nagisa": "You didn't tell her?!"

"Kyubey": "Yesterday, we agreed to meet today." "I was going to give her information in exchange for meeting with us."

"Nagisa": "If you plan to meet up with a friend, you shouldn't bring someone else along." "Especially someone she doesn't know." "No wonder she's not here." "You need to learn some common sense, Kyubey."

"Kyubey": "Your culture is so hard to understand…" "I'll go and talk to her, on my own."

"Kyubey": "So you were there, after all." "That girl was Nagisa Momoe. She's a candidate to become a new Magical Girl."

"Inui Itsumi": "You make contracts with girls that young, too?"

"Kyubey": "Yes, she is young." "That's why I was hoping you could help guide her once she makes a contract." "As a fellow Magical Girl, you'd be a better teacher than me." "That's why I wanted you to meet her today."

"Inui Itsumi": "Are you serious?" "A child that young, becoming a Magical Girl?!" "She'll die right away!"

"Kyubey": "You don't know that for sure. We have had young Magical Girls before." "Besides, I'm recruiting her because you aren't fulfilling your duties." "You're even ignoring the Witches in your own territory." "So, I need to find someone to cover for you, as quickly as possible."

"Kyubey": "I'm not picking on you. I give warnings to others, too." "But you're definitely the reason I'm in a rush to recruit Nagisa Momoe." "That fact is undisputed." "You're neglecting your duties as a Magical Girl." "You also need to be careful not to run out of Grief Seeds." "You need to hunt more Witches."

"Kyubey": "All you're buying is cheese." "That's not healthy for a girl your age." "You should try and eat a more nutritionally balanced diet."

"Nagisa": "These aren't for me." "I'm taking all of these cheeses to my mom." "I won't be eating them." "I actually don't like cheese very much."

"Kyubey": "Will your mom eat that much cheese?"

"Nagisa": "Maybe not all of it." "But it's better if she has a selection to choose from." "She couldn't have it for a while." "But she's allowed to start eating it again."

"Kyubey": "Aren't you going to buy any food for yourself?"

"Nagisa": "I ate school lunch." "Some of the leftover cheese will be enough for me."

[Afternoon, Outside School-Grounds Setting]

"Nagisa": "Did you know my mom used to be on TV?" "She was beautiful and popular." "But then she married my dad…" "And she got sick… And her sickness kept getting worse…" "My dad was hardly ever home because of his work." "But then he stopped coming home at all." "He abandoned me and my mom."

"Kyubey": "…"

"Nagisa": "Maybe that was why…" "Maybe she wouldn't have gotten sick, if she hadn't married my dad."

"Kyubey": "Do you resent your father?"

"Nagisa": "No… I'm not like that." "It's not good to resent anybody."

"Kyubey": "I see."

"Nagisa": "I still have my mom." "I don't care if I don't have a dad."

[Afternoon, Crosswalk Setting]

"Kyubey": "You're the victim of a society that is not yet fully developed." "I think becoming a Magical Girl is the best option for a girl like you." "It will help give you hope."

"Nagisa": "I…" "I don't think I'll be good at it."

"Kyubey": "You won't know that unless you try. I'll even support you as best I can."

"Nagisa": "If I say no…" "Does that make me a bad person?"

"Kyubey": "Not at all." "The decision should be made of your own free will." "No one can force you to choose, or penalize you for your choice." "I can only speak from my own experience." "Kyubey": "It was? I didn't realize." "Sorry about that."

"Nagisa": "Huh? There's something over there." "It looks kind of blurry…"

[Gertrud/Witch Labyrinth Setting]

"Nagisa": "Wh-what is this?!" "What happened?" "Where am I?!"

"Kyubey": "Oh no!" "We've entered a Witch's Labyrinth!"

(Witch Familar/Anthony Appears)

"Nagisa": "S-something just appeared!"

"Kyubey": "That's a Witch's Familiar! Nagisa, you've got to make a—"

"Nagisa": "…?!"

"Nagisa": "Wh-whoa!"

"???": "Huh? Kyubey?" "What are you doing here?"

"Kyubey": "You're…the Sleepwalking Ghost." "I'm not sure if it's lucky or unlucky to run into you with this timing."

"???": "Aww… Don't you appreciate me?" "Fine, I'm just gonna beat these guys up real quick." "You there, stay where you are! This is going to be dangerous."

"Nagisa": "O-okay."

[Exit Witch Labyrith/ Back to City Setting]

"???": "You all right?"

"Nagisa": "Thank you for saving me."

"???": "No problem at all. We've got to look out for one another!"

"Nagisa": "Um… What's your name?"

"Yu": "I'm Yu. I've forgotten my last name." "Call me Yu." "If you're with Kyubey, does that mean you're a Magical Girl, too?"

"Nagisa": "I haven't decided yet."

"Kyubey": "She's still just a candidate."

"Yu": "Ah, okay."

"Nagisa": "U-um, if I become a Magical Girl, will you be my teacher?" "I'd like you to teach me, Yu!"

"Yu": "What? M-me?!"

"Yu": "You are." "I'm going around killing the bad guys whose names are on my list." "Since you're a good guy, Nagisa, I won't kill you."

"Yu": "Oh, "Nagisa" Momoe isn't on my list." "But actually, there's someone on it with the same last name." "See? This name here." "Do you know this person?" "I went to her house earlier." "But nobody was home." "None of the lights were on, and the inside of the house was covered in trash."

"Nagisa": "Did…" "Did that person…do something to make you angry?"
