Jason Stephens 2014 Santa Clara Valley Merlot: This Merlot begs for a generously marbled cut of meat or something substantive. It is robust and full-bodied, with aromas and flavors of black cherry and ripe dark skinned fruits, interwoven with notes of cacao nibs, anise, and spiced fruitcake. An edge of balancing acidity adds lift and keeps it enjoyable, while a firm backbone of grainy tannins gain on the finish. Although Merlot dominates, there are additions of 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Malbec. This is a very nice Merlot for the money (SRP $24). Janu’s wine label art received loads of attention last night; and rightfully so—they’re gorgeous, and have a look that would really stand out on a crowded shelf.
