MOONLIGHT Moonlight streams into my room tonight it’s particularly bright I’ve just woken from an overwrought dream this feeling of lingering ghosts comes from me, just as moonlight comes from the bare moon bright clear moonlight do you know where you are do you know after it has paced back and forth for hundreds of years a dream wished for death probably between this life and the last we’ve met countless times because we overlooked each other because of that admired radiance because of that unimportant but beautiful particularly bright light

Shu (penname of Hou Xianbo, taken from the one of the brushstrokes in Chinese calligraphy), was born in Shanghai in August of 1972. His father was a sailor and his mother worked as a hospital laboratory technician. In 1991, he entered Shanghai University’s College of Business, but discontinued his studies to move to Beijing in 1994. He began to publish poetry on the internet in 1999 and in 2000 helped to establish “Eraser,” a literary website. In 2003, he was selected by Stars Poetry, Anthology Magazine, and Poetry Monthly as the winner of the 2002 Annual Poetry Prize. He joined the independent publishing project “Bastard” and published a collection called No More Asshole, No More Egypt. He currently lives in Shanghai and makes traditional woodcut printing blocks.
