Jude sighed as he stared at the clock on the opposite wall from his cash register. He had worked a double shift after asking for overtime, and he was slightly regretting it. He needed the money for a new washing machine, though. He hated having to go the laundromat all the time; it was a hassle to have to drive home from work, gather his dirty laundry, then drive back out into town again. He pulled himself back from his gaze as a customer approached him with their groceries. Smiling, he scanned the groceries for them, making casual small talk. Noticing a younger face behind the current customer when he glanced up from the scanner, he felt a little relief come over him. All day Jude had been helping older individuals, and while he didn’t mind chatting with some of them, he had hoped that maybe he would actually talk to someone who wasn’t born 30 years before him. Once the customer left, Jude watched as the next person came forward. “Hey, did you find everything okay?” he asked, “And before you ask, we are currently out of stock of donuts until next Tuesday.”
